Birds at The Landing Lights Wetland – 12 April 2019

I made a repeat visit to the Landing Lights Wetland at Barton Park. Last visit I had observed a pair of Black-shouldered Kites and I was interested to see if they were still in the vicinity. I had an interesting afternoon.

When I arrived at the wetlands, I noticed the usual ducks, stilts and a few Black-fronted Dotterels.

I concentrated however on photographing the very fast flying Welcome Swallows. The flew in close proximity to the water surface and sometimes they would hit the water with their beaks. Perhaps they were grabbing small insects?

While I was doing this. I looked up and saw a Black-shouldered Kite approaching. I was ready with my camera.

It was then joined by another Kite.

They then flew off out of sight. I went back to photographing the Swallows. Later when I was about to leave, I noticed one of the Kites had perched on top of a high sewer vent.

I approached and waited for it to take off.

I finished my photography with some newly arrived Spoonbills –
