Birds at Tempe and the Cooks River – 14 September 2019

I was able to join the Tempe Birdos for their monthly bird survey. I was in the group that surveyed at Tempe Wetlands.

The birds were a bit quiet on the morning of our visit. Here are some that we saw –

Red Wattlebird –

Wood Ducks with chicks –

It is worth noting that the month before, this pair had 12 chicks, and now there are only two remaining. Probably typical? Predators – there has often been act seen in the Wetlands, or it could be Goshawks or other birds.

Red-browed Finch –

There were a few nests being built. Here are a pair of Magpie Larks building a nest –

At morning tea at Tempe Reserve, we spotted a Blue-tongued Skink lurking around –

I then cycled home via the Cooks River. At Tempe Station, there was an Intermediate Egret –

And I checked out the Tawny Frogmouths. I spotted 3 lots. First, the nesting pair near Younger Avenue –

I only spotted a single bird (male?) on the nest.

Another nesting pair at the Dog Park –

Again, I only spotted a single bird (male?) on the nest.

I think both these nests were unsuccessful last year.

At the Boat harbour, the local pair where perched in different trees –
