Blue Mountains Canyoning – 24 October 2019

Warm weather means the canyoning season has arrived. Bob and myself were headed up the mountains to visit a fairly short canyon. I had heard about the canyon from another canyoner. They had wanted to know if I knew about it and if it had name. It was one I was not familiar with. It sounded short – but also seemed worth visiting.

So Bob and myself decided it would be good for a visit easy in the season. It was not a long walk to the start of the canyon – but it was scrubby. It did look like it had not been visited too often.

We had scrambled down a small scrubby creek. and not that far down the bottom had started to drop out. We reached a short drop. It looked tricky to scramble down so we set up a rope and descended via short abseil.

Not far downstream things were more serious. We had reached a much larger abseil. We could not see  the bottom. We joined two ropes and then descended. This was into an excellent section of canyon.

Not far after that abseil there was another – this one much shorter. But also into an excellent slot.

Not far after that the canyon opened up.

It had ended – all too soon. We found an easy pass not far downstream and scrambled out.

Then more scrub. Slow going, but not too far. Nearly back at Bob’s car, we found shady spot for lunch.

It had been short day – but it was nice to visit a new canyon.
