A few more canyons have been opened. This included some near Mt Wilson, so Bob and myself headed up the Mountains with the intention to visit Why Don’t We Do It In The Road Canyon, and then continue down part of Wollangambe Canyon.
We arrived at Mt Wilson and parked at the Cathedral of Ferns. We were soon on our way, along the fire road to the track leading down to the start of the canyon. Recent rain had resulted in a lot of regrowth after the bushfires.
Lower down in the creek, at the start fo the canyon we ran into more parties. A large TAFE party learning how to abseil, and a bushwalkers group from the Blue Mts. We didn’t have to wait long, before we could abseil down. And being a small part, we were soon at the front.
The creek below the first abseil was not burnt out very much. Some trees had fall down and logs had been moved by floods, but changes were minor.
We soon arrived at the lower constriction. This begins with a nice abseil into a slot.
The next abseil is down a short drop – and is a bit awkward.
Then we arrived at the last abseil (which can be scrambled around easily) – this takes you into the narrowest part of the canyon. But its a spot where it is hard to get photos from the bottom – as the pools are deep.
We then arrived at the junction with Wollangambe Canyon. I inflated my lilo, but Bob was content to swim through the long pools. The water was not that cold, but the air temperature was not that warm.
We made fast progress through the Wollangambe, and soon reached one of the exits. We climbed out and stopped for lunch on a rock outcrop near the top of the ridge. Then it was an easy walk back to the Cathedral of Ferns. On the way, we looked at the regrowth after the fires. It was good to see new growth on the top of the tree ferns. Their trunks showed they had been burnt.
Also- there was some fungi out –
