Back to the Central Coast Wetlands – 9 August 2020

Showers were forecast for this day, but I was keen to get outdoors. So I carefully checked  various weather forecasts. I often use the Norwegian Weather Forecast – as you can get hour by hour forecasts for specific locations such as towns or lakes etc (For anywhere in the world), and have found it reasonable accurate. It looked like the rain would arrive at the Central Coast town of Wyong later than it would arrive in Sydney, so I headed to the Central Coast Wetlands.

Southern Emu-wren

I arrived at the Wetlands a little after 9 am and stayed till around 2 pm and enjoyed fine weather the whole time. During my visit, I periodically checked the rain radar and could see a large storm over southern Sydney quite early on. It was slowly moving North.

One reason to go back to the Central Coast Wetlands was to try and get better photos of the Southern Emu-wrens. I spent a fair part of the day looking for them, and on my third attempt at visiting the habitat I had seen them in earlier I was successful. I spotted one. A colourful male. But these birds are very shy and, at least for me, difficult to photograph. The Emu-wren I saw wanted to stay in the protective reeds. But at least my photos are much better that those of my previous visit.

But there are lots of other nice birds there too. Here are some of what I photographed –

Straw-necked Ibis

Australasian Shoveler

White-faced Heron

Great Egret

Cattle Egret

Black Swan

Australian Pelican

Pied Butcherbird

Striated Thornbill

Grey Fantail

Yellow Eastern Robin

Eastern Spinebill

Red-rumped Parrot

Welcome Swallow

And now for some raptors –

White-bellied Sea Eagle

Nankeen Kestrel

Brown Goshawk

Whistling Kite

Swamp Harrier (being harassed by a Masked Lapwing)
