Birds at Emu Green – 22 September 2020

This was another very good day of bird photography at Emu Green at Emu Plains.

Each visit I make to this area, I see some of the same birds I have seen on previous visits and I also see a few birds there that I have not seen before. There seems to be continually varied cast of birds present. This visit, I was able to get reasonable photos of Scarlet Honeyeaters and Rainbow bee-eaters. I had seen those species on my last visit. New birds included Rufous Whistlers and a Mistletoebird.

On my walk from the station, on my previous visit, I had seen a major altercation between two Whistling Kites and some Magpies. The Whistling Kites were building a nest in a tree in the grounds of the Correctional Centre, but it seems they were not wanted by the local magpies. I dint see any Kites on the walk in, and on the way out I scanned the tree with binoculars and it looks like the Kites have abandoned the nest.

On that last visit, I had also seen a Brown Goshawk, when I entered the reserve. It wa again flying around there.

A little along the road was a nice Scarlet Honeyeater.

I walked around the where I had seen the Rainbow Bee-eaters on my previous visit. They were still around.

This one has caught an insect –

Its about to eat the insect when a second Rainbow Bee-eater flies in, also with an insect.

This one flies off to grab a dragonfly.

The Dragonfly escapes!

This time the Bee-eater eats the dragonfly.

Here is a Fairy Martin

And a very large Blue-tongued Skink

A European Goldfinch

There was a nice pair of Rufous Whistlers

One of the many Superb Fairy-wrens

A Mistletoebird

And one of the many New Holland Honeyeaters.

It was turning out to be a very hot day, so I left to long after lunch.
