I spent a full day visiting three sites on the Northern Beaches where I mainly photographed raptors.
At the first site, a Peregrine Falcon was guarding the nest area. I could see one chick that looked like it was either fledged or close to fledging.
I didn’t stay long at the site – as it was obvious that my presence was not wanted by the adult bird, although it did settle down for periods. Here are some of the photos during my visit –
I then went to the second site – Rat Park at Warriewood. It was there that I photographed a pair of Osprey on their next. Like my previous visit to this spot, the Osprey were from time to time being harassed by Currawongs.
In the past, I have also seen Nankeen Kestrels hunting in the same park. I dint see any this visit however. But I did see one at my next site – Long Reef. I had lunch at the lookout on the headland and while I eating, I watched a Nankeen Kestrel hunting for food.
It would spot something and then dive towards it.
Mots time it seemed to miss out on the catch.
This time it flew back up with a lizard.
It seemed to examine the lizard, and then seemed to bite its head – perhaps to make sure it was dead. It then flew off with it – perhaps to feed young at a nest.
It was soon back for some more hunting.
I had timed my visit with the low tide, so I went down on to the rock platform, but I could not spot any migratory birds. Here are a few of the many Crested Terns –
Walking out, I again spotted the Nankeen Kestrel – still hunting. Here it has another small lizard.
