Sydney Park and Wolli Creek – Birds, Bats and Fungi – 1 April 2021

The day before I had been fortunate to hear about a new species of Flying Fox at the Turrella Camp on Wolli Creek. The light had been very bad for photography when I visited in the late afternoon, so I thought I would return to try and get some better photos. I also decided to first visit Sydney Park to see what birds were out.

At Sydney Park, I had a pleasant time. Not long after I arrived I spotted a quite distant Buff-banded Rail

And I also saw a Brown Quail family –

Here are some of the more common birds at the park. An Australian Swamphen

A Royal Spoonbill

This Willie Wagtail caught a nice dragonfly –

A Darter fly overhead –

A White-headed Heron

Here are some Eastern Long-necked Turtles

And some more stinkhorns were out –

Phallus rubicundus

Lysurus mokusin

And I was able to get another look at one of the Quails –

I then travelled to Turrella, which took three separate trains. Here is a White-faced Heron hunting at the footbridge ver Wolli Creek –

And a New Holland Honeyeater

At the Flying Fox Camp, the Little-red Flying Foxes were in the same place I had seen them the afternoon before.

I was hard to get a photo of one of them flying. This was the best I could do –

And for comparison, here is a Grey-headed Flying Fox –
