Wolli Creek – Cooks River Walk – 4 February 2023

I was attending the Sydney Fungal Studies Group’s AGM at Girrahween Park at lunchtime, so decide to fill out the day with a walk down Wolli Creek from Bexley North and then walk home via the Cooks River.

I had a pleasant day, although the number of birds I saw was low – probably due to walking in the heat of the day.

Along Wolli Creek, I heard plenty of birds, but not many revealed themselves.

Water Skink

Orchard Swallowtail Butterfly

Red-browed Finch

Water Skink

Laughing Kookaburra

Grey-headed Flying Foxes

Many still were clutching babies.

At Waterworth Park – I saw this Grey Butcherbird with a cicada –

And a Noisy Miner with cicada –

I could not find the Tawny Frogmouths at Gough Whitlam Park.

Little Pied Cormorant

Approaching Illawarra Road – I saw an out of season Sacred Kingfisher

Welcome Swallow

I then walked through Marrickville Golf Course and looked for the nesting Tawny Frogmouths. I noticed the nest was empty. The single chick must have fledged recently. I looked but could not spot the chick or its parent.

This pair of Tawny Frogmouth’s had earlier in the season raised two other chicks, and I did spot them, with the other parent.
