Royal National Park Heritage Walk – 6 April 2023

I had heard about an Aboriginal art cave in Royal National Park that sounded interesting, so Bob and myself decided to have a look for it.

We set off along a fire road, and then headed into the bush. It was not too scrubby.

we reached a cliffline and then started following it around the base.

We reached small cave. Was it the one? We could see a midden –

On the roof of the cave were a lot of hand stencils in white ochre. I used the iDStretch app on my phone to enhance the art.

It is unusual to see hand stencils on the roof of cave in my experience. We then look at the walls. We found two faint hand stencils –

One wall had some faint charcoal art. This one looks like a kangaroo head –

And some more, of unknown content  –

After a good look around, we headed back to the fire road.

We then set off to another area nearby that look like might have some art caves or sharpening grooves on rock platforms.

We spotted a distant Rock Wallaby

We reached our rock platforms and had good look around, but could find no sharpening grooves or rock engravings. Nor could we find any overhangs suitable for occupation.

On the way back, we did see this old trig station –

We then set off for Dharawal National Park in search of another art site, but to reach it we would have had to travel through a catchment area. So we abandoned that plan. In stead we walked the short way down to Maddens Falls
