It was time for the Bird Survey along the Greenway between Taverners Hill and Hawthorne Light Rail Stations.
The group met at Taverners Hill and things started off fairly quiet. We often record a lot of small birds from the elevated level of the station – but this morning, for some reason, we saw very few birds there.
Here is a New Holland Honeyeater –
Red Wattlebird
We did hear anises a few Superb Fairy-wrens along the lower path, but they eluded my camera. This White-faced Heron was perched on a roof –
At Marion Street we saw this big school of small fish in the canal –
Lower down the canal, we spotted a Collared Sparrowhawk perched in a tree on the far side.
It then took off, but did not fly far, and it perched in a much better spot for photography.
It was great to see this raptors close.
Further down the canal we looked for a White-faced Heron nest that I had spotted on an earlier trip. It had two healthy and quite well developed chicks. One chick was sitting on the nest –
The second chick was perched nearby –
We got brief view of another raptor, probably a Brown Goshawk –
In the small bushcare site on the east side of there Greenway, we spotted a Laughing Kookaburra –
One member of the group, Geoff, who lives nearby and been seeing a Satin Bowerbird recently in that area, and we were all overjoyed to all see it perched in a tree –
This is a rare bird to see in the Inner West. A very nice sighting.
As usual, the group finished with coffee and a chat in the cafe near Hawthorne Light Rail Station. Another very pleasant morning.
