Birds at Mason Park Wetlands – 13 April 2023

A wet day was forecast, especially in the morning, but it was starting to look better in the middle of the day, so I sent messages to Valerie and Sue to see if they would like to join me at Mason Park at Homebush.

Valerie drove us out there, and we were soon on the boardwalk with our binoculars. Neither Valerie and Sue had been to this wetland before and they were impressed with the views you can get of the birds. Here are some that we observed –

Black-fronted Dotterel

Pied Stilts

Australasian Grebe

Pied Stilt

Pink-eared Duck

The Pink-eared Duck was relatively close for a change, but it was not very active – remaining on small island while we were at the wetlands.

A Pied Stilt approached and got  a shock.

Australasian Darter

Laughing Kookaburra

Little Egret

Pied Stilt

Pink-eared Duck

It looked like it was getting ready for some action….. but no.

Pied Stilts

I think this “mirroring” is courtship behaviour. One bird imitates the other.

Then the male tried to take things to the next level but was rebuffed.

Black-fronted Dotterels

A storm was approaching, so we thought it was time to head home. It was nice to get out though. And once more, the elusive Spotted Crake was not seen.

Many thanks to Valerie for driving us there and back.
