Mason Park Wetlands – 30 April 2023

This was a pleasant day spent at Mason Park Wetlands at Homebush.

Approaching the wetlands, I saw number of Inkcaps –

When I left, I had another look to see if they had autodigested (which is what ink caps do – turn into an inky mass) – but they had all been knocked over.

Anyway, to the birds I saw –

Pied Stilt

Black Swans

Masked Lapwings

Then two Royal Spoonbills landed in Powells Creek. One must have been a juvenile, as it seemed to be demanding food.

A second adult arrived.

But they didn’t stay long.

Back in the wetlands – a Great Egret

Black Swan

Three Musk Lorikeets flew over –

Little Pied Cormorant

Willie Wagtail

Australasian Grebe

Pied Stilt

The Great Egret had gone to Powells Creek to hunt for fish –

It had an unusual walk.

Then a Brown Goshawk arrived.

The Great Egret flew out of the creek.

The Brown Goshawk had arched in tree on the far side of the wetlands. Eventually it took to the air again –

Little Egret

The Great Egret had returned to Powells Creek and resumed its hunting for fish. These are strange bird to watch when they are hunting – the way they walk, the way they move their neck and also they way they sway their heads.

It had caught a small fish –

Chestnut Teals

Welcome Swallow

Little Egret

Yellow-faced Honeyeater

Royal Spoonbill

No Dotterels this visit. I also did not spot the Pink-eared Duck, nor the Spotted Crake.
