Cooks River Walk – 7 May 2023

I went on an afternoon walk down the Cooks River to look for birds. I took my camera.

My first stop was at the Biddle St Waterhole. On previous trips, there had been a Sacred Kingfisher there. No sign of it this visit, but I did spot a single Tawny Frogmouth perched in a paperbark.

I then walked down to the end of the street and into Marrickville Golf Course. More Tawny Frogmouths. I spotted one in a tree by itself –

And then there were two roosting in another tree.

I then walked down to the Cooks River and walked downstream. Here is a White-faced Heron

Between Illawarra Road and Gough Whitlam Park, I was on the lookout for Sacred Kingfishers. No sign on any.

I did hear some King Parrots, and here is one –

In the billabong at Gough Whitlam Park – there was a foraging Royal Spoonbill

And a Great Egret

I then started walking back. I heard an Olive-backed Oriole, and it took a while to spot it –

And some Little Pied Cormorants

And another Great Egret

And, near Illawarra Road, I did get a glimpse of a Sacred Kingfisher. But it took off soon after I spotted it.
