Malabar Headland Visit – 17 November 2023

I visited Malabar Headland again, accompanied by Sue and Valerie. Our main purpose was to check out the status of the Peregrine Falcons. If there were any chicks this season – then they should have fledged by now. We did see both adult Peregrine Falcons – but they were on different parts of the cliffs – about 500 apart, and did not seem to interact while we were there. There was no sign on any fledglings and we saw no food being delivered to a nest. So I think we have concluded, sadly, that their nest has been unsuccessful this year.

As we were leaving the carpark at the south end of Maroubra Beach, as spotted a White-faced Heron with a nice skink –

A little further, near the Park entrance gate – a Black-shouldered Kite flew past –

And here is a Pied Cormorant

After a lot of looking along the cliffs, we spotted a Peregrine Falcon perched in a nook above the landslide area. It was the adult female.

We waited for it to take off.

Then some more waiting…. A Naval Boat left the harbour, and a tugboat.

We left the landslide area, and walked down towards Boora Point. We waited on a nice ledge – sheltered from the strong south wind. Then we spotted the male Peregrine Falcon fly out from the cliffs nearby.

We dint see where it went. We then moved back to the landslide area, and the female was back in the same nook –

And again, we waited for it to fly.

The female left the area, so we made our way back to the ledge where we had seen the male. It was a good place to have lunch. We spotted a nice Lesueur’s Velvet Gecko

Then another bird photographer, Dale arrived. We then moved back to the landslide area and spotted the female on a different ledge –

We thought it was about to take-off, but we were wrong.

We spotted an Osprey flying past – a fair way out to sea.

But the Peregrine Falcon was fast asleep.

It later gave some signs that this time it might take off.

It was then time for us to head back to Maroubra Beach. We had had a pleasant day – but it was sad that it looks like there will be no chicks this season.
