I had a great day at Long Reef in the Northern Beaches. It was very cold and very windy, and I was hoping for some shelter on the beach below the lookout. The tide was high.
When I arrived at the lookout, around 11:30 am, it was very windy, so I headed down to the bottom. On the way down, with binoculars, I spotted three Ospreys perched in a dead tree on the north side. I walked along the beach towards them.
And I got close, and a better angle and waited for some flying.
The first took off –
Then the second took off –
And then i waited for the third to take off.
They all flew away, but as I started walking back to the headland, I noticed one had returned.
Then a second few back –
So I settled down for some more waiting. I was having my lunch, when one took off and I missed some good photos. I was waiting for the second to take off, when i noticed some hunting going on near the headland.
I was in time to see an Osprey returning with a fish –
There were two other bird photographers there – Chang Ma and Cecile.
And then we spotted another hunting Osprey –
And it returned with a fish –
And then another Osprey arrived –
This dive was not successful.
This time it succeeded –
And then another Osprey –
Not successful, so it tried again –
Again, no luck. It flew over to the island, and then we spotted another Osprey flying nearby –
And another Osprey flew past, with the remains of its prey –
And a few last photos of one of the Ospreys flying past –
It was still very windy, and I thought it was time to head for home. It had been a very good day.
