Fungi at Wolli Creek – 17 June 2023

I joined the Sydney Fungal Studies Group for their field study at Wolli Ck Regional Park. The group, and visitors, met at Girrahween Park, and then set off along the track downstream on the lookout for fungi.

Conditions had been very dry, and I was not expecting a lot of fungi to be out, but with a large number of observers, we found a reasonable amount. Although a lot of what we found was dried out and in a poor condition.

Blue Labyrinth Walk – 15 June 2023

Bob and myself finally completed a walk we had intended to do more or less in 2020. Back then, we had set out, but failed at the first pass, so we had to greatly modify our walk. The pass we had failed on was the descent to Glenbrook Creek from the end of the Greens Road Firetrail at Valley Heights. On a later trip, again in 2020, using a much easier crossing of Glenbrook Creek we did reach the second objective of the earlier bushwalk – visiting a nice section of Kanuka Brook. But we still wanted to revisit Greens Road and its firetrail and discover the pass down to Glenbrook Creek.

On our first walk, Matt Stevens had commented that there was a pass and had mentioned where to look. And indeed – a route seems to be marked on Open Street Maps, at least going part way down. Continue reading →

Malabar Headland – More Peregrine Falcons and Whales – 12 June 2023

Another fabulous day out on Malabar Headland. The last trip had been cut short due to approaching rain, and Valerie hadn’t been able to join us on that occasion, so another visit was arranged for the Monday of the King’s Birthday Long Weekend. Valerie, Sue and myself walked out, and we later met up with Michael.

The weather forecast was for a fine but cool day.

Grey Hat Falls and The Crayfish Pool – 9 Jun 2023

This was actually a heritage walk. Bob, Doug and myself were looking for some Aboriginal art caves in the greater Glenbrook area of Blue Mountains National Park. We had looked for one of these caves on two previous trips but had had no luck. This time we found it, and it was quite interesting. I won’t post any photos however. We looked for but did not find a second cave.

We also visited the well known art cave – Red Hands Cave, and also walked down to Kanuka Brook and looked at The Crayfish Pool and the nearby waterfall, which some people call Grey Hat Falls. Continue reading →
