Lane Cove Valley Fungi Walk – 4 June 2023

Fabulous Fungi at Bola Creek – 3 June 2023

I joined a group down to Bola Creek in Royal National Park surveying the fungi. The event was an activity of the Sydney Fungal Studies Group Inc. Despite somewhat dry conditions, we found a good abundance of interesting fungi in the area.

Back to Bonnie Doon – 1 June 2023

In September last year, Bob and myself had visited the Bonnie Doon Reserve area at Katoomba. One of our aims then was to look for and hopefully traverse the old tracks that had been made by the original owner of the property – John Britty North. An extensive network of private tracks had been constructed that linked up to the Six Foot Track at Nellys Glen. The tracks were made late in the 19th century.

These tracks form a route through some rugged and interesting country, past a series of waterfalls, along narrow ledges, past a large detected pinnacle and up through the heart of gorge to reach the top of the major cliffline. At one point, the track crosses a creek half way up a waterfall on slippery ledge, poised above a precipice. Continue reading →

Barton Park Birds – 31 May 2023

In the afternoon, I spent a few hours at Barton Park and stayed at Landing Lights Wetland the whole time. There were some good birds to observe. At the wetlands, the water level has been dropping recently, and these make good conditions for Dotterels to turn up and forage on the exposed mudflats. I spotted two Black-fronted Dotterels during my visit. I also had a very good encounter with one of the Australian Spotted Crakes.

Fungi at Wolli Creek – 31 May 2023

I went on a morning trip to Wolli Creek to check the status of the fungi. I first looked on the upstream part of the track – west of Hartill Law Street, without finding very much out. So I then went to Girrahween Park and walked downstream towards the rock climbing area where we had seen good fungi recently.
