The Greenway Bird Survey had been on in the early morning. After lunch I decided to visit Barton Park for some more bird photography.

It turned out to be relatively quiet. Here are some of the birds I saw, mainly at Landing Lights Wetland. Continue reading

Greenway Bird Survey – 2 August 2024

The Greenway Bird Survey was on. It was not the normal Saturday morning for the Dulwich Hill section of the Greenway – it had been postponed  a week due to bad weather. This proved to be worthwhile as we enjoyed beautiful weather.

The survey started off well, when we spotted a Tawny Frogmouth perched in a tree near where we meet outside Waratah Mills Light Rail Station.

And some of the birds we saw along the circuit – Continue reading

Malabar Headland – 2 August 2024

I spent a pleasant day, accompanied by Sue, out on Malabar Headland, but it was quieter than we were hoping for. We saw no Peregrine Falcons! And not that much whale action. But the weather was very pleasant.

Here are some photos – Continue reading

The Horse Track and Rodriguez Pass – 1 August 2024

I had heard that the Horse Track near Evans Lookout at Blackheath had recently been reopened after a period of track work, and suggested it to Bob as a suitable outing. The usual track had been closed for a long period, after bushfires and floods, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service has decided to now use the Horse Track as the way to go from Evans Lookout to the Grose Valley.

We had a very interesting, although somewhat strenuous walk.

At the new Evans Lookout carpark, a Rock Warbler flew down to say hello – Continue reading

Cooks River Birds – 31 July 2024

I spent the morning on the Cooks River – between Illawarra Road and Gough Whitlam Park. The highlight of this visit was observing the resident Sacred Kingfisher for a fair time.

When I walked down from Illawarra Road, I spotted the Kingfisher perched on a branch over the water. Continue reading

Ospreys at Long Reef – 28 July 2024

I had a great day at Long Reef in the Northern Beaches. It was very cold and very windy, and I was hoping for some shelter on the beach below the lookout. The tide was high.

When I arrived at the lookout, around 11:30 am, it was very windy, so I headed down to the bottom. On the way down, with binoculars, I spotted three Ospreys perched in a dead tree on the north side. I walked along the beach towards them. Continue reading

Birds at Barton Park – 27 July 2024

It was the Saturday for the Greenway Bird Survey, and in the early morning, I walked over to Waratah Mills Light Rail Station, but on the way it started raining. And meeting with the others, the rain persisted , so we sheltered under cover at the station. Looking at the rain radar, it looked like the rain had set in, so we decided to cancel the survey and head for a coffee. But later that afternoon, the rain ended and the weather looked a lot better, so I decided to visit Barton Park for some birding.

The vast turned out to be quite good, although I did miss some nice birds.

Here is a White-faced Heron hunting in Riverine Park – Continue reading

Malabar Headland – 26 July 2024

It was time for  another visit to Malabar Headland. I met up with Sue at Maroubra Beach and we then walked out onto the Headland.

We  had a very pleasant day, but the Peregrine Falcon action was a bit limited.

We scanned the cliffs carefully with binoculars, but could not spot any perched Peregrine Falcons, so we sat down in a sunny sheltered spot to wait. Below,. we spotted a sealContinue reading
