Wolli Creek Kingfishers – 18 January 2026

I visited Wolli Creek Regional Park, near Earlwood, to spend more time photographing the nesting Sacred Kingfishers again. It was a good visit as the birds were quite active in bringing food to their nest.

Not long after I arrived, I heard a Sacred Kingfisher calling. When they have food in their beaks, they seem to use their “screaming” type call, rather than their contact/territorial call. Perhaps it is the only call they can make with a partly open beak? Continue reading

Powerful Owls at the Botanic Gardens – 17 January 2026

My friend Sue had recently spotted a pair of Powerful Owls resident in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney. So I joined her on a visit to the gardens to see if we could spot them.

We soon spotted them, and both were perched close together.

It’s hard with the dark foliage to get good photos of them. Continue reading

Greenway Walk – 16 January 2026

Some friends, Nipper, Airdrie and Doug were on bikes trying out the new Greenway Cycleway, and asked if I wanted to meet up for coffee. It sounded like a good idea, so I walked down to Arlington and met them at a local cafe.

It was nice to catch up, and when they departed on their bikes, I decided to walk along part of the new Greenway that had not seen before – so walked between Arlington and Dulwich Hill Station. Continue reading

Birds at Wolli Creek – 15 January 2026

I made a short trip to part of Wolli Creek Regional Park to photograph the nesting pair of Sacred Kingfishers and also any other birds nearby.

I waited at the nest area for a while, and this one turned up with a skink.

Friend, and reptile expert, Ken Griffiths, has identified the lizard as a Weasel Skink.

Birds at Taren Point – 14 January 2026

Bushwalking friend Elaine had organised catch up brunch at Engadine. After a great feast, most of the party (Valerie, Brian, Elaine and myself)  headed off to the shore of Botany Bay neat Taren Point to see what birds were around. The tide was low.

We first went to the Taren Point Shorebird Reserve. then wandered along to the shared platform at Woollooware Bay.  Here is a selection of photos of the birds we saw – Continue reading

Newcastle Excursion – 1 January 2026

For the first day of the new year, I wen ton a train trip to Newcastle with Valerie and Sue. We had originally planned a more ambitious trip. Not as far, but one involving bus and ferry trips, as well as a train journey. But the forecast wind would not be that good for ferry travel and we decided to postpone that trip, and do a trip by train. Newcastle was our destination.

It turned out to be a wet and very windy day, so our choice proved to be a good one.

We caught a Mariyung Train from Central to Newcastle. Continue reading

Wolli Creek Birds – 28 December 2025

I visited Wolli Creek Regional Park to photograph birds. I stayed mainly near the Bray Avenue Wetlands and Paperbark Creek.

I could hear quite a few birds around Paperbark Creek, but none came out of the scrub for photos, so I headed then to the Bray Avenue Wetlands. Again, I could hear the sounds of quite a few birds, and I eventually spotted a Sacred Kingfisher perched high in a tree. Continue reading
