The first day of our trip had been very good despite cool wet weather. The weather on the second day was better – still cool but mainly dry. Our plan was to visit Crooked Crevice Canyon and then Tiger Snake Canyon – both fairly dry and conveniently close to each other.
We walked out along the track towards Tiger Snake Canyon, and then at the saddle we left the track and walked down to Crooked Drive Canyon. Continue reading
I had headed up to the Northern Blue Mountains with Bob for 5 days of canyoning. The weather on the first day of our trip was cool and a little wet, so we chose to visit a short and fairly dry canyon. After that we planned to look for a nearby Aboriginal art site.
This turned out to be a good choice. It was a short walk to our canyon, and we were soon approaching the first abseil. Continue reading

This was my second full visit to the National Maritime Museum. My friend John was taking his two boys – Jasper and Sebastian along, and asked if I wanted to come along. As well, we were joined by Janine, Deepak and Ezra.

This is always a nice canyon to revisit – one that offers good value. For the effort involved you get to visit a fair bit of canyon. It was essentially a repeat of a trip I had been on back in December 2020 – and all the members of that party were on this trip, plus some more.
On the previous trip had been Bob, Ian (Nipper) and myself. And this time we were joined by Ian’s wife Airdrie, their daughter Ella, and Ella’s work friend Tegan. Like the previous trip, we started from the Mt Wilson Road, at what is now called the Red Hill Fire Trail. Continue reading
I visited two venues in the Northern Beaches – starting at Long Reef. I later met Michael, birding friend from the inner west, and we travelled to Rat Park to see if the Ospreys were around.
At Long Reef, when I arrived the tide was low, so I walked out on the rock platform to see what migratory birds were around. On the way down, I spotted two Nankeen Kestrels perched on the cliffs. I watched them for a while, but they seemed to be content to stay perched. Continue reading

Malabar Headland played an important part in the defence of Sydney during World War II. The artillery placed on the headland – the “Malabar Battery”, was one of a number of fortifications along the coast of Sydney that was built to defend Sydney against surface raiders.

It was thought that enemy ships could approach Sydney and use their guns to shell important infrastructure such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge from outside the harbour. To prevent this a number of batteries were set up along the coast. The location of these batteries was – Continue reading
This visit was very quiet in regard to the birds I photographed. I only saw a single Peregrine Falcon fly along the cliffs at high speed – and that was all. I also saw an Osprey, with fish fly past, and that was about it.
I did spend a bit of time photographing the World War II structures – and I will post separate entry to the blog about this interesting aspect of the history of the Headland. Continue reading
