After coming back from the Coxs River, I headed out in the early evening to visit the Tawny Frogmouths in a nearby park in Dulwich Hill. I soon spotted the birds – an adult and two chicks perched together.
I had arrived at about 7:19 pm, but it was not for another 30 minutes, at 7:49 pm that there was the start of some action. The parent started some wing stretches. Continue reading
It is always nice to return to the Coxs River on this weekend in December each year and meet up with the bushwalkers from Sydney University Bush Walkers.

I was heading up to the mountians for the weekend, but not leaving till around noon, so that gave me time to join the Tempe Birdos for their monthly survey.
I joined the group that helped survey the wetlands. It was reasonable quiet compared to previous surveys. But we did see one interesting bird – a Nankeen Night Heron. These are rare visitors to the wetlands. Continue reading
It had been a wet gloomy day. But the rain had stopped in the late afternoon, so I headed up to a local park to photograph the Tawny Frogmouths. I had last visited them on 7 December 2021.
I soon found them, but they were perched in a Casuarina in a dark section of the park. Like before they were not too high. But I could only spot two birds – a parent and a single chick. Continue reading
I was heading up the Blue Mountains with Bob for a bushwalk. The weather forecast was not good and in discussing trip we had decide to visit Yondell Ridge at Springwood and look for an old historic track.
I had heard reports of this track that links Yondell Ridge with the Magdala Creek track a few years back, and on Sassafras Gully walks had kept a lookout for it while walking up Magdala Creek. I didn’t think it was Riley to be at the junction of Magdala Creek and Glenbrook Creek as the cliffs there are quite high and don’t break. I had looked in several areas upstream along Magdala Creek looking for the reported old stone steps, but I had seen nothing likely. I knew about a track will upstream that leaves Magdala Creek and heads up onto Yondell Ridge – but that didn’t seem like the right one. Continue reading
Rain had been threatening, but the afternoon seemed OK so I made short trip to Sydney Park at St Peters. My main focus of this visit was to photograph the Little Pied Cormorant chicks being fed. I had seen this on my previous trip, but had been in a poor position for photography – only having an obscured view.
My visit turned out be brief as it started raining while I was there. But I did achieve my goal. Continue reading
I joined the Greenway Birdos for the monthly bird survey on the Greenway between Taverners Hill and Hawthorne Light Rail Stations. The morning was quite dark and gloomy with rain threatening. This made photography difficult and the birds less likely to appear.

Michael and Fiona from the Greenway Birdos had spotted a Tawny Frogmouth family perched in a park in Dulwich Hill, close to Canterbury Road. I went in the late afternoon to see if I could spot them.
I did eventually. One problem was that I was looking too high. These birds move from day to day for their roosting. When Michael and Fiona had some them they had seen an adult and two chicks perched in a Casuarina. So that was where I looked. But this evening, they were perched in a Jacaranda, and a lot lower darn than I expected. Again there was one adult and two chicks. Continue reading

Another short afternoon visit to Sydney Park. It was a wet gloomy day, and I hoped to get a gap between showers.
During my visit, I spent a fair bit of time looking to see if I could spot any of the Tawny Frogmouths that I had see earlier nesting. I failed to find any. But looking up, I did spot a Channel-billed Cuckoo trying to look inconspicuous. Continue reading
