Greenway Bird Survey – 27 September 2021

Day 93 of lockdown. Local bird surveys have not started up properly again, but I was able to join David Hair and survey the Greenway between Tavererns Hill and Hawthorne Light Rail Stations.

More Tiny Bugs on Leaves 25 – 26 September 2021

Here are my latest photos of bugs living on the backs of leaves. The leaves were collected from Peace Park and also Johnson Park on the Greenway.

First some lerps. These are the coverings excreted by the nymphs of small insects that live on leaves. The insects, members of the family Psyllidae, build the lerps for protection. The lerps can be in a wide range of different shapes depending on the species that build them. These ones are fibrous – Continue reading

Peace Park Picnic – 25 September 2021

Day 91 of lockdown. It was great to catch up with friends for another picnic. Everyone is Greater Sydney is still limited to travel only 5km or within your Local Government Area, and then only a maximum of 5 double vaccinated adults can meet for a picnic. Checking maps allowed me to meet up with Su Li and Brent at Peace Park in Ashbury. Martin and Steffy were also able to make it along.

Cooks River Bike Ride – 24 Sep 2021

Day 90 of lockdown. I was good to be able to catch up with Digi Dave for a bike ride along the Cooks River Cycleway. We checked out a few Nature sites along the way. Then had stop-off at Gough Whitlam Park for lunch before riding back.

Birds at Sydney Park – 23 September 2021

Day 89 of lockdown. With a slight relaxation of lockdown regulations, I was able to enjoy a day at Sydney park with both Sue and Valerie. We had a very please day, catching up, walking around the beautiful park and spending some time looking for and observing birds.

Like some previous visits, we observed a lot of baby birds. Lats visit, Valerie and myself had seen a pair of Dusky Moorhens with four chicks. All chicks seem to be doing well. Continue reading

Birds at Tempe, Barton Park and the Cooks River – 22 September 2021

Day 88 of lockdown. I decided a walk would be the best option for my daily exercise break. I travelled by bus to Tempe then walked down to the Tempe Wetlands. After that I continued around Tempe Reserve, across the Cooks River to Cahill Park, then followed the cycleway to Barton Park. On my return, I walked along the foreshore through Kogarah Golf Course to Cahill Park, then back along the Cooks River to home.

At Tempe Reserve I heard a Fan-tailed Cuckoo, and it was easy to locate. Continue reading

Cooks River Walk – 20 September 2021

Day 86 of lockdown. I just did short exercise walk down to the Cooks River, and then upstream to the Boat Harbour and Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands, walking back down on the far side.

Picnic Time – Callan Park – 18 September 2021

Day 84 of lockdown. With a very slight relaxation of lockdown conditions, picnics of up to five fully vaccinated adults are now allowed, as long as they are held within everyone’s travel limits. Thanks to Martin and Steffy for organising a picnic at Callan Park.

The picnickers were Martin, Steffy as well as John and Chuin Nee and their children Jasper and Sebastian, and myself. All of us reside within the Inner West LGA. Continue reading
