Day 16 of lockdown. I decided it was about time to walk down Wolli Creek again and then return home by walking up the Cooks River. Along Wolli Ck I saw birds and fungi, and then more birds along the Cooks River.

Day 15 of lockdown. The previous two days had been wet so I was keen to get outdoors for some exercise. So I walked down to the Cooks River. This time, I walked upstream to the Boat Harbour and Cup and Saucer Creek, then went downstream all the way to Tempe Reserve.

Day 12 of the lockdown. I decided to do another bike ride along the Cooks River and then to Barton Park and back. I packed my camera to record any birds I saw along the way.
I looked along the Cooks River for Kingfishers, and I did see one perched on rocks a little below Illawarra Road. But when I parked my bike and got my camera out, it had flown away. So I continued on my way. Continue reading
Day 11 of lockdown. A nice day was forecast, so I decided to do a longer exercise walk. I caught an almost empty bus to Bexley North and then walked down Wolli Creek via the Two Valleys Track to Tempe and then walked home via the Cooks River (the other branch of the Two Valleys Track).
I had a very interesting day. Along the way, I was able to observe fungi, orchids and birds. Continue reading
Day 10 of lockdown. Options for exercise are rather limited. I have usually either cycled or walked down to the Cooks River and then continued either upstream or downstream. On this day, I walked downstream. At the river, I bumped into bushwalking friend Valerie, who also lives close to the Cooks River, so we decided to walk together and look for birds.
We had an interesting walk, getting exercise and also being able to observe some fascinating birds along the way down and back. Continue reading
Day 8 of lockdown. My exercise was a ride down to Botany Bay and back via the Cooks River and Botany Bay Cycleways. I carried camera with me and stopped a few times on the way down to photograph any interesting birds I saw.
I was lucky. Near Tempe, I diverted into Waterworth Park and soon spotted a Sacred Kingfisher. Probably the same one I had seen upstream a few days earlier. When I got my camera out, it flew away, but I spotted it again sitting on some oyster covered rocks. Now it had a small crab. I watched it for a while. Continue reading
Day 7 of lockdown. This time I set off in the morning for an exercise walk along the Cooks River as I thought it would be less crowded. It was still pretty crowded, although perhaps less crowded than it would have been in the afternoon. It was a nice sunny day.
I walked down to the Cooks River at Wardell Road and crossed the Lang Street Bridge and hen walked upstream. As I mentioned above, a lot of people were out and about exercising. Family groups on bikes, people walking their dogs, walkers striding along, others ambling. It was nice to be outside enjoying the great weather. And all seemed to be social distancing. Day 6 of lockdown. On this day, my exercise was a walk down Wolli Creek from Bexley North to Tempe and then back up the Cooks River to home. I caught a visually empty bus to the start. On the way I was on the lookout for fungi, orchids and birds.
I had a very pleasant walk, despite there being a lot of other people all the way along the Two Valleys Track. The Wolli Ck part was not too crowded, but the Cooks River path was quite congested. Continue reading
Day 5 of lockdown. After a nice bike ride the day before, I though another bike ride for exercise would be good. This time after riding down to the Cooks River, I headed in the other direction – upstream – and ended up riding to Homebush Bay and Sydney Olympic Park.
But before I started, I heard a Laughing Kookaburra outside my unit. I looked out windows and saw it perched on a tree outside my bathroom. I went for my camera and saw it was still there. Continue reading
Day 4 of lockdown. My exercise this day was a bike ride to Barton Park and back – along the Cooks River Cycleway. As usual I took a camera with me and grabbed a few photos of the birds I saw along the way.
My first stop was just downstream of Illawarra Road, when I was lucky to spot a Sacred Kingfisher perched in a tree just above the river. I have seen Kingfishers here before and they are usually very skittish – often flying off before I can get my camera ready. This one stayed in its perch and I was able to get some nice photos. It did move twice – but to nearby perches. Continue reading
