Day 3 of the lockdown. A bit wet. In the afternoon, I decided to walk down to the Cooks River for some exercise. This time, once at the river, I decided to walk downstream. I walked all the way to Tempe Reserve, walked around it and the walked back.

Day 1 of the lockdown. I went for a short walk in the afternoon down to the Cooks River, and completed a circuit – walking up to the Boat Harbour and Sugar Mill, then crossing over and walking around the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands, then walking back downstream on that side and then to home.

After taking part in the Greenway Bird Survey in the early morning, I spent the afternoon going for a walk along the Two Valleys Track – starting at Bexley North and then continuing all the way down to Tempe, and then I followed the track up the Cooks River to Wardell Road and from there walked home.
This was a nice outing. I was looking for fungi, orchids and birds. All along the track I spotted orchids. These were all Greenhood Orchids of two species. Continue reading
I had intended to attend a fungal survey at Mt Wilson, but at the time, due to Covid, I was restricted to travel only in the metropolitan area. But, that meant I was able to attend the local bird survey along the Greenway near Waratah Mills light rain station.
Yellow-faced Honeyeater
It was a beautiful morning – fine and sunny, and a lot of birds were out and singing. We saw quite a few honeyeaters – mainly New Holland Honeyeaters, but also a few Yellow-faced Honeyeaters. Continue reading
After seeing good fungi out in other parts of the Lane Cove Valley recently, I though it about time to check out the valley below Thornleigh. I caught a train to Thornleigh and walked out to Thornleigh Oval and then down the track to Lorna Pass and The Lane Cove River.
The good fungi started at the river – in a patch of rainforest. As I continued down the river, I came across small patches of fungi, but they were spread out over a long distance. I continued down to Browns Waterhole, and then went about another kilometre to check out another site before returning back to Browns Waterhole where I checked out an Aboriginal site. Malabar Headland is a nice place to spend some time. I headed out that way to see some whales and hopefully some Peregrine Falcons.
With track work being undertaken, you cannot walk from Magic Point Boora Head, so I stared this time from Malabar and walked out to Boora Head. On the way out, I could see a whale breeching, not that far out. But I was a fair way from Boora Head, and I walked fast to the cliffs for a better view. Continue reading
I was enticed, by finding nice fungi at Bola Creek the day before, to undertake a second excursion to Bola Ck for a longer and better look.
This time, I went by myself, walking down the Couranga Track from Waterfall Station. This also allowed me to examine a rock platform on the way fro Aboriginal engravings. I looked careful but could not see any signs – except perhaps some very faint sharping grooves. I went to another nearby rock outcrop, and found a circular shape that may have been engraved by Aboriginals. Continue reading
I joined Digi Dave for a pleasant day in Royal National Park. Our intention was to look for fungi at Bola Creek, and that was where we started, but after an hour or so, it starts raining, and the rain seemed to become steady, so we decided to head to Wattamolla where is necessary, we could shelter under overhangs if the rain persisted.

This was a mixed day – the first part spent photographing fungi at Ferndale Park at Chatswood, and then at the nearby Blue Gum Reserve. Next I walked down to the Lane Cove River and headed downstream to photograph the nesting pair of Ospreys.

This was the day that I was hoping to go to Bola Creek in Royal National Park for a fungal survey. I thought conditions for fungi should be quite good. But the day was cancelled due to a poor weather forecast. And looking at the rain radar during the day, this was wise decision, as it seems to rain there most of the day. But studying weather forecasts, it looked like the rain would be confined close to the coast, so I decided to travel to Springwood and see it any fungi was out at Sassafras Gully.
