Cooks River and Wolli Creek Walk – 18 July 2021

Day 22 of lockdown. I decided on walk down to the Cooks River and then up Wolli Creek. The original plan was then to walk back to home via Earlwood and Cup and Saucer Creek back to the Cooks River, but once on the walk, I decided to return the same way.

Along the way, I was on the lookout for birds and fungi. But the fungi I spotted was disappointing and I did not bother taking any photos. This is one of the reasons I came back the same way, as I walked a lot faster than I expected. Continue reading →

Barton Park Bike Ride – 15 July 2021

Day 19 of lockdown. My exercise break was an afternoon bike ride along the Cooks River to Barton Park and back.

Hawthorne Canal and Cooks River Walks – 14 July 2021

Rookwood Necropolis – 13 July 2021

Day 17 of lockdown. With a 10 km (or local government area) limit being imposed, I checked places I could go for my exercise breaks, and decided a bike ride along the Cooks River Cycleway to South Strathfield and then a ride around Rookwood Necropolis would be interesting.

It had been a long time since I had visited Rookwood. That trip had been a bike ride too. I had thought Rookwood was just a cemetery, but the map said it was a “necropolis”, and even though I had heard this word, I looked it up to find out what the proper meaning was.  A city of the dead. And one interesting thing, the Victorian era Rookwood Necropolis is the largest in the World according to Wikipedia. Continue reading →

Wolli Creek and Cooks River Walk – 12 July 2021

Day 16 of lockdown. I decided it was about time to walk down Wolli Creek again and then return home by walking up the Cooks River. Along Wolli Ck I saw birds and fungi, and then more birds along the Cooks River.

Cooks River Birds 11 July 2021

Day 15 of lockdown. The previous two days had been wet so I was keen to get outdoors for some exercise. So I walked down to the Cooks River. This time, I walked upstream to the Boat Harbour and Cup and Saucer Creek, then went downstream all the way to Tempe Reserve.

Cooks River and Barton Park Bike Ride – 8 July 2021

Day 12 of the lockdown. I decided to do another bike ride along the Cooks River and then to Barton Park and back. I packed my camera to record any birds I saw along the way.

I looked along the Cooks River for Kingfishers, and I did see one perched on rocks a little below Illawarra Road. But when I parked my bike and got my camera out, it had flown away. So I continued on my way. Continue reading →

Wolli Creek and Cooks River Walk – 7 July 2021

Day 11 of lockdown. A nice day was forecast, so I decided to do a longer exercise walk. I caught an almost empty bus to Bexley North and then walked down Wolli Creek via the Two Valleys Track to Tempe and then walked home via the Cooks River (the other branch of the Two Valleys Track).

Cooks River to Tempe Walk – 6 July 2021

Day 10 of lockdown. Options for exercise  are rather limited. I have usually either cycled or walked down to the Cooks River and then continued either upstream or downstream. On this day, I walked downstream. At the river, I bumped into bushwalking friend Valerie, who also lives close to the Cooks River, so we decided to walk together and look for birds.

Botany Bay Bike Ride – 4 July 2021

Day 8 of lockdown. My exercise was a ride down to Botany Bay and back via the Cooks River and Botany Bay Cycleways. I carried camera with me and stopped a few times on the way down to photograph any interesting birds I saw.

I was lucky. Near Tempe, I diverted into Waterworth Park and soon spotted a Sacred Kingfisher. Probably the same one I had seen upstream a few days earlier. When I got my camera out, it flew away, but I spotted it again sitting on some oyster covered rocks. Now it had a small crab. I watched it for a while. Continue reading →
