I had never been to the bush at Lugarno, and thought it about time to make a visit. I had joined Digi Dave and Roger from lunch, and after we finished, Roger headed home to work, and myself and Digi Dave decided to visit the Blackbutt Track and H V Evatt Park at Lugarno.
It turned out to be an interesting visit. The first bird I spotted was an Australian Owlet-Nightjar. This one had a rufous morph. The bird was roosting in a hollow on the Blackbutt Track. Continue reading
I was heading up the Mountains with Bob, and our plan was to do the Zig Zag Walk at Clarence. Bob had not been on the walk, and I was keen to visit the area again, and as I expect the train to running soon – the way back via the tunnels will be closed off to walkers. I also thought there may be pink Flannel Flowers on the tops.
We did the walk and enjoyed it, and finished before lunch. So we had plenty of time left. We decided to visit some lookouts on the way down he mountains as we headed home. Continue reading
I was on my way back to the city from Springwood. On my journey up the mountains, I had seen from the train window that Moorakoo Falls was flowing quite well after the recent rain. Moorakoo Falls are not very well known, even though they are marked on the current topographic maps. The reason why they are not well known is that the waterfall only flows after heavy rain. When the waterfall does flow – it is spectacular sight.
So I could have got off the train at Glenbrook on the way up the mountains, but the light for photography was poor, so I decided to see the waterfall in the afternoon. I walked to Glenbrook Bluff Reserve from the station. This time, I used a bush track that links from close to the station with Grey Street. This saves about ten minutes. Once in the Bluff Reserve, I walked to the lower lookout near the old terminus for the funicular railway. This provides the best view of Glenbrook Gorge from that side. Moorakoo Falls were flowing nicely. Continue reading
The big wet spell and ended – and I was keen to get outdoors into the bush. I thought the tracks may be wet and creek crossings tricky with high water, so I decided a short walk may be the best. I decided to head to Springwood and visit Birdwood Gully.
It was far too early after the rain for a lot of new fungi to be out. I did see some new coral fungi – Clavulinopsis sp. Continue reading
The rain had stopped! During the afternoon the rain eased and then stopped. I was keen to go outdoors, so decided to visit he nearby Sydney Park.
I was pleased on this visit to spot a Brown Quail. It was a single bird. WhenI have seen Brown Quails before – they have usually been in a group. So I expect there to be more of them about. Continue reading
During the extended wet period, I was stuck indoors, and I used some of the at time to work on a video slide show project that showcases the beauty of Nature found in Wolli Creek Regional Park. This is the closest bushland remnant to where I live and a place I often visit – for fungi and bird photography. There is a nice walk along the creek from Bexley North to Tempe following the Two Valleys Track.

When I started bushwalking, and visited Splendour Rock in the Wild Dog Mountains, I knew about the chains below the rock that provided a route down to the lower ridge and eventually to Howling Dog Spur. I knew these chains were known as “Thomo’s Chains”, but at the time did not know any more about them.

Later, in the mid 1970’s, when I joined the Kameruka Bushwalking Club, I heard a bit more about the story of the chains. They were placed at Splendour Rock in the mid 1950’s by KBC members as a memorial to a former president of the club – Bob Thomas. Bob died tragically young whilst walking in Tasmania in 1955. I thought I better maximise my outdoor time while it was not raining, so after my Wolli Creek walk I headed to St Peters and spent a couple of hours in Sydney Park. Unfortunately like previous recent visits, I did not manage to spot any of the birds I was after. But I still had an interesting time, and it was nice to be outdoors.
