Cooks River Walk – 3 July 2021

Day 7 of lockdown. This time I set off in the morning for an exercise walk along the Cooks River as I thought it would be less crowded. It was still pretty crowded, although perhaps less crowded than it would have been in the afternoon. It was a nice sunny day.

I walked down to the Cooks River at Wardell Road and crossed the Lang Street Bridge and hen walked upstream. As I mentioned above, a lot of people were out and about exercising.  Family groups on bikes, people walking their dogs, walkers striding along, others ambling. It was nice to be outside enjoying the great weather. And all seemed to be social distancing.  Some were doing their exercise on the river. Continue reading →

Wolli Creek and Cooks River Walk – 2 July 2021

Day 6 of lockdown. On this day, my exercise was a walk down Wolli Creek from Bexley North to Tempe and then back up the Cooks River to home. I caught a visually empty bus to the start. On the way I was on the lookout for fungi, orchids and birds.

I had a very pleasant walk, despite there being a lot of other people all the way along the Two Valleys Track. The Wolli Ck part was not too crowded, but the Cooks River path was quite congested. Continue reading →

Homebush Bay Ride – 1 July 2021

Day 5 of lockdown. After a nice bike ride the day before, I though another bike ride for exercise would be good. This time after riding down to the Cooks River, I headed in the other direction – upstream – and ended up riding to Homebush Bay and Sydney Olympic Park.

But before I started, I heard a Laughing Kookaburra outside my unit. I looked out windows and saw it perched on a tree outside my bathroom. I went for my camera and saw it was still there. Continue reading →

Even More Cooks River Birds – 30 June 2021

Day 4 of lockdown. My exercise this day was a bike ride to Barton Park and back – along the Cooks River Cycleway. As usual I took a camera with me and grabbed a few photos of the birds I saw along the way.

My first stop was just downstream of Illawarra Road, when I was lucky to spot a Sacred Kingfisher perched in a tree just above the river. I have seen Kingfishers here before and they are usually very skittish – often flying off before I can get my camera ready. This one stayed in its perch and I was able to get some nice photos. It did move twice – but to nearby perches. Continue reading →

Cooks River Birds – 29 June 2021

Day 3 of the lockdown. A bit wet. In the afternoon, I decided to walk down to the Cooks River for some exercise. This time, once at the river, I decided to walk downstream. I walked all the way to Tempe Reserve, walked around it and the walked back.

Cooks River Birds – 27 June 2021

Day 1 of the lockdown. I went for a short walk in the afternoon down to the Cooks River, and completed a circuit – walking up to the Boat Harbour and Sugar Mill, then crossing over and walking around the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands, then walking back downstream on that side and then to home.

Wolli Creek and Cooks River Nature Walk – 26 June 2021

After taking part in the Greenway Bird Survey in the early morning, I spent the afternoon going for a walk along the Two Valleys Track – starting at Bexley North and then continuing all the way down to Tempe, and then I followed the track up the Cooks River to Wardell Road and from there walked home.

This was a nice outing. I was looking for fungi, orchids and birds. All along the track I spotted orchids. These were all Greenhood Orchids of two species. Continue reading →

Greenway Bird Survey – 26 June 2021

I had intended to attend a fungal survey at Mt Wilson, but at the time, due to Covid, I was restricted to travel only in the metropolitan area. But, that meant I was able to attend the local bird survey along the Greenway near Waratah Mills light rain station.

Lane Cove Valley and Terrys Creek – Fungi, Orchids and Aboriginal Engravings – 25 June 2021

After seeing good fungi out in other parts of the Lane Cove Valley recently, I though it about time to check out the valley below Thornleigh. I caught a train to Thornleigh and walked out to Thornleigh Oval and then down the track to Lorna Pass and The Lane Cove River.

The good fungi started at the river – in a patch of rainforest. As I continued down the river, I came across small patches of fungi, but they were spread out over a long distance. I continued down to Browns Waterhole, and then went about another kilometre to check out another site before returning back to Browns Waterhole where I checked out an Aboriginal site. Then, after lunch, I walked out to Eastwood via Terrys Creek. Continue reading →

Malabar Headland – 24 June 2021

Malabar Headland is a nice place to spend some time. I headed out that way to see some whales and hopefully some Peregrine Falcons.

With track work being undertaken, you cannot walk from Magic Point Boora Head, so I stared this time from Malabar and walked out to Boora Head. On the way out, I could see a whale breeching, not that far out. But I was a fair way from Boora Head, and I walked fast to the cliffs for a better view. Continue reading →
