Hawthorne Canal and Cooks River Walks – 14 July 2021

Day 18 of lockdown. I did two exercise walks. One was an early morning walk along the Hawthorne Canal, then I travelled back via light rail for a walk down the Cooks River to Tempe and back.

On the Hawthorne Canal, I look to see what birds were out. Here are a few –

White-browed Scrubwren –

Australasian Figbirds –

Yellow-faced Honeyeater –

White-faced Heron –

After this walk, I met up with friend Valerie, back at the Cooks River. Exercise with another person being allowed. We repeated a walk down to Tempe and back that we had done the week before. Again, I was on the lookout to see what birds were out.

Magpie Lark –

Little Pied Cormorant –

Sacred Kingfisher –

The tide was too high to make it worthwhile watching to see if the kingfisher would do some hunting.

Little Black Cormorant –

Little Black Cormorant and Little Pied Cormorant –

Little Pied Cormorant –

At Tempe, we stopped to watch an Australasian Darter on Fatima Island.

A Great Cormorant flew up the river.

A Little Pied Cormorant was fishing, but we did not see it catch anything.

And a rarer visitor, a Caspian Tern flew past.

As the tide started going down, more birds were congregating on Fatima Island.

We then walked back up the river for the rest of of our exercise.
