This was a very pleasant walk down Sassafras Gully at Springwood to look for and photograph the fungi. I found a reasonable amount out.
I started from the track at the end of Sassafras Gully Road and walked down to the Lagoon at Glenbrook Creek, then continued to the Magdala Creek junction. I then followed Magdala Creek to Springwood via Fairy Dell. Continue reading

After the bird survey in the morning, in the afternoon, I caught a bus to Bexley North and then walked down the Two Valleys Track along Wolli Ck to Tempe. I then walked up the Cooks River and back to home. I was on the lookout for mainly fungi and birds.

I had been meaning to head up to the Northern beaches for a while in order to see some migratory birds at Long Reef. I had not managed a trip due to unfavourable weather or tides. Now I had a chance to make a visit. The low tide period was in the afternoon, so I spent the early part of the day on the sea cliffs seeing if any Peregrine Falcons were about. I found one.
It stayed around long enough for me to get some nice photos of it flying, and one take-off sequence. Continue reading
Many years ago, I had been on a walk in the then proposed Gardens of Stone National Park, when we tried to go down a creek we found ourselves in a short canyon. I cannot recall who was on the trip, but I think it did include Andrew Cox and Keith Muir. I will have to hunt out the slides. When we got to a waterfall in the canyon, we turned back and climbed out and found a way around. I am not sure if we didn’t have sufficient rope to abseil or could not see an good belay point. But I can remember calling the canyon Alcatraz Canyon because it was near the Newnes Forest Prison Farm.
This trip, with Bob, was the first time I have returned to that creek. The canyon is very short – but well worth doing – especially with a good flow of water. Continue reading
I was a bit worried about the weather as I headed up to Springwood, and it was raining lightly as I left the station and walk to the star of the track. But the rain turned out to be relatively minor and the fungi was quite good.
I started down from Boland Avenue and walked down towards Springwood Creek. I then walked up the track towards Lucinda Avenue (I found an old sign saying the creek there was Shelly Creek). I later returned the same way. Continue reading

After the amazing experience a few days before, I thought about returning and staying longer to try and get some better photos of the pink Flannel Flowers currently in bloom along the ridge.
So I decided that an overnight trip would be worthwhile. I caught a train to Mt Victoria and then walked out the start of the ridge. This took about an hour, and except for the first part of the walk (back along the Highway to the railway crossing, then over the footbridge and continuing a little further before crossing over to the fire road) was mostly pleasant. This was a pleasant activity organise by Brian Everingham with the National Parks Association of NSW. I travelled to the park with Valerie and Sue and we met the others at Lake Belvedere a little after 7 am. In the rest of the party was as well as Brian was Sue W, Ken, Ann and later Helen.
We first visited Lake Belvedere, then the large Waterbird Refuge and then walked back via the mangroves and the Bennelong Pond. We finished at lunchtime. Continue reading
