Cycling and Bird Photography at Sydney Olympic Park – 22 September 2019

This was a very pleasant day spent with friends John and Chuin Nee and their young sons Jasper and Seby riding around the cycle tracks at the Sydney Olympic Parklands.

I rode there along the Cooks River Cycleway, and on the way stopped off at Mason Park, to check out the birdlife. There were quite a few Pied Stilts and I also spotted two Black-fronted Dotterels – Continue reading

Another pleasant day spent in my local area recording the birdlife.

I started by cycling down to the Cooks River and then riding along the cycleway to see what was about. On the mudflats I spotted this Great Egret – Continue reading

Climate Rally – 20 September 2019

I attended the huge Climate Rally in Sydney on 20 September 2019. The only problem was the size of the crowd was so large that I could not hear any of the speeches. I was too far from the stage area.

After the rally at The Domain, there was a march to Hyde Park. Here are some more photos. Continue reading

Birds at Nurragingy Reserve – 19 September 2019

The weather forecast was for showers, but I was keen to get outdoors, so after consulting the weather radar, I jumped on a train to Doonside and then spent a pleasant day at Nurragingy Reserve. It did rain, quite heavily, but only for about twenty minutes, and I sat in a shelter and waited for it to stop.

The birds were a bit quiet compared to some previous visits, but there are always some nice birds to be found. Most of the interesting birds I found along the perimeter fire road which I visited three times during my stay. Continue reading

Waterfalls at Hazelbrook and Woodford – 18 September 2019

I had planned a trip up the Blue Mountains with Bob, and due to bad weather we decided to visit some of the waterfalls. We first stopped off at Hazelbrook, then at Woodford, and lastly we made a quick visit to a lookout above Glenbrook Gorge.

Horseshoe Falls

At Hazelbrook, we set off from Oakland Avenue along the track down to Horseshoe Falls. On the way I took photos of one of the small cascades on the way down – Continue reading

Malabar Headland – 16 September 2019

With rain forecast for most of the week, it looked like Monday would be the most reasonable day to get out, so I headed back to Malabar Headland National Park for some more bird photography. And it turned out to be bird photography, since on this trip I didn’t spot any whales, dolphins or seals. But the birds were nice.

Before I entered the park, I stopped at a small pollution retention pond. There were some Welcome Swallows swooping close to the water surface, but also some other birds – Tree Martins. I can’t recall seeing them before – only the more common Fairy Martins. Here are some photos, first a Welcome Swallow or two – Continue reading

Birds at Bicentennial Park – 15 September 2019

I made another visit to Bicentennial Park to photograph the birds there. I was hoping some of the migratory vistas may be present, but only spotted one bird. But, as usual the resident birds were nice.

On this visit I seemed to photograph a lot of Superb Fairywrens. Here is a selection of photos – Continue reading

Birds at Tempe and the Cooks River – 14 September 2019

I was able to join the Tempe Birdos for their monthly bird survey. I was in the group that surveyed at Tempe Wetlands.

The birds were a bit quiet on the morning of our visit. Here are some that we saw – Continue reading

Mid Mountains Heritage Walk – 13 September 2019

Bob and myself headed up the mountain by train and got off at a station in the mid mountains. Our objective was to walk out and explore the ridges for Aboriginal heritage sites. We then intend to cross a gorge and walk to the station at a different town.

This worked out well walking wise,  and we did find quite a few interesting sites. Our total distance was in the order of 20 – 24 kms. I expect a lot of these sites are sensitive and so I am deliberately being vague with location details. Continue reading

Out on the Northern Beaches – 12 September 2019

This was a full day of bird photography in the Northern Beaches region of Sydney. On the day I visited a number of sites to see what the birds were doing. For the first two sites I was accompanied by Nature photographer Ken Griffiths.

We travelled up by B-line bus and hen walk out to the sea cliffs to see if a pair of Peregrine Falcons was active. It was. Both adults birds were around. I was able to get some good sequences of them taking off and in flight. Here is one taking off – Continue reading
