On Good Friday, I completed a nice walk down the Lane Cove Valley from Thornleigh to Porters Creek (and then to to Macquarie Park). I was looking for fungi and orchids.
There was a fair bit of fungi out at the start – on the track down Lorna Pass from Thornleigh Oval. Mainly Amanitas. But generally there was not that much out along the valley. Here is a selection – Continue reading
This was a very pleasant visit with Liz to Coachwood Glen Reserve at Blackheath (on the Megalong Road).
We didn’t find a huge abundance of fungi out but with careful looking we did find quite a few interesting species. Continue reading
I spent a pleasant few hours down on the Cooks River photographing some of the birds. I cycled down to the river and roads along to the Boat Harbour and then to the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands. I didn’t see too many birds out, so slowly cycled back towards home on the other side of the river.
I was almost at Wardell Road – my return home route, when I spotted a Darter drying its wings on a perch. So I parked my bike and started taking a few photos. I kept still and quiet. Continue reading
I attended the campaign launch at Springwood for the Campaign to Save the Blue Mountains Wild Rivers. It was held at the Springwood Community Hub on the evening of 26 March. The hall was packed to overflowing with concerned people.
People came along because they were concerned about the loss of wilderness, the loss of aboriginal heritage and the destruction of wild rivers. This will be the result of the NSW Government’s plans to raise Warragamba Dam.
The principal guests were Bob Brown, former leader of the Greens Party and well know for his work in saving the Franklin River in Tasmania and Bob Debus, former NSW Environment Minister. Continue reading
After seeing some reasonable fungi in Wolli Creek I thought it may be worthwhile looking for fungi at Sassafras Gully at Springwood. This was my first fungi walk there for this season.
The fungi was reasonable. On this trip, I started off down the track at the end of Sassafras Gully Road, walk down to Glenbrook Creek and then returned via Magdala Creek and Fairy Dell. Continue reading
I, along with thousands of others, attended the huge Time2Choose Climate Rally and March in Sydney.
We met at Martin Place and then after some speeches we all mare along Elizabeth Street to Prince Alfred Park. It must have been one of the largest crowds to assemble in Sydney in recent years – probably around 8,000 people. And not only people – but there was also a large contingent from the country that rode their horses on the march. Continue reading
I was heading up the mountains with Bob and Doug. we had originally planned to do a canyon – and the boot was full or ropes and harnesses. However the weather was not really good for canyoning so we considered a few other options and eventually decided on a walk to Blackwall Glen at Blackheath.

Back from Tassie, I was keen to check out some fungi in my local area, so I set off along the Two Valleys Track along Wolli Creek between Bardwell Park and Turrella.
A reasonable amount of fungi was out. Tow were interesting. One was the first Cordyceps type fungi that I have found on my wanders through Wolli Creek. It was Cordyceps takaomontana ( = Isaria tenuipes and Paecilomyces tenures) which grows off a beetle larva. Continue reading
Wendy was returning home. She dropped me off at Ulverstone and I then spent three very enjoyable days with my sister and brother in law who live in that area.
On the first afternoon, we visited Guide Falls near Burnie. These waterfalls (there are several drops) are quite attractive – and would have been a lot more so if the water level was higher. Continue reading
The Tarkine is a large area of wilderness remaining in the North West of Tasmania. It contains large areas of rainforest, wild rivers, limestone areas and a magnificent coastline. It is an area that should be all protected in a national park – but sadly that has not happened. There are a few small reserves and large areas where logging and mining is allowed. In other places recreational four wheel driving has has caused a lot of damage to fragile coastlines and to aboriginal sites.
Neither Wendy nor myself had been to the Tarkine, and we were keen for a look. We had come from the east via the Lyell Highway to Queenstown, and then to Zeehan. From there, we took the road to the small town of Corrina on the Pieman River. Continue reading
