I spent a very pleasant few hours down on the Cooks River observing and photographing the birds.
I first went to check out the Tawny Frogmouths at the Dog Area. I found them easily, but could only see one chick and both parents. Perhaps the other chick was hiding under one of the parents? I could not see it nearby. Continue reading
This was the third canyon I visited with Albert over the long weekend. The Sunday was a cooler day and it started out with some light rain. But overall it turned out to be a good day for canyoning photography.
We packed up from our campsite at Mt Wilson and drove out to the carpark on the Waratah Ridge to start our trip. There were quite a few cars there – no doubt due to Wollemi National Park being closed due to numerous bushfires. So quite a few canyons were visiting Blue Mountains National Park instead. On the second day of the long weekend, Albert and myself took our cameras down a section of Wollangambe Canyon at Mt Wilson. We visited the “Greg Section”, which allowed us to also photograph the lower part of Whungee Wheengee Canyon.
It was sunnier than the previous day, but if a section of the canyon was lit too harshly with direct sunlight, we could wait a while, usually not too long, for clouds to come. Continue reading
Clatterteeth Canyon, which lies in Du Faurs Creek near Mt Wilson was the first of three canyons I did with Albert over the long weekend. We did these canyons as photographic trips – carrying cameras and tripods with us and taking plenty of stops for photos.
The weather over the long weekend was quite hot on the first two days, and canyons provided a perfect refuge from the heat. It was also fairly cloudy, so we could enjoy reasonably soft light in the canyons for our photography. Continue reading
I had the afternoon free after a morning spent in the city, so I caught a ferry to Watsons Bay and then set off along the Coastal Path heading south.
The weather was fairly dull, so not that atmospheric for coastal landscapes, so I concentrated on bird photography. Continue reading
I had been lucky on some recent trip to the Cooks River where I had been photographing the birdlife. Digi Dave was keen to see and photograph some of the birds, so he joined me on the afternoon.

This was a pleasant walk, but undertaken on a very hot day, along part of Middle Harbour in Garigal National Park. We walked from Carroll Creek down to Middle Harbour Creek and then to Roseville Bridge. Then a little further along the foreshore (and some road walking) to Flat Rock Beach and then into Bantry Bay and out near Bates Creek. On the walk were Keith, Rose, Chris and myself.
We met at the end of Fergusson Street at Forestville. We then entered the National Park and took the track down to Carroll Creek. A short way along, we noticed a nice Green Tree Snake in a tree close to the track. Continue reading
I made two very interesting visits during the day to the Cooks River to look at the birdlife. The highlights of these visits were watching a Egret catching a lizard and then on the second visit seeing a Darter catching and then swallowing a fish.
When I arrived at the river, my aim was to see how the Tawny Frogmouth chicks were doing. I soon spotted them perched in a tree near their old nest, but I could only see both parents and one of the chicks. Photos of the chick were a bit difficult at first, but I went back to their tree an hour or so later, and the chick was awake then. Continue reading
Earlier in the day, David Hufton and myself had visited Rocky Creek Canyon. We had intended to camp in that area, but a total fire ban meant that we would not be able to cook our dinner on our stoves, so we headed to Blackheath for a pub dinner.
We then headed out to Anvil Rock Lookout for the sunset. It was a very pleasant evening. The heat of the day was thankfully diminishing. We camped nearby at Perrys Lockdown. Continue reading
