Budderoo National Park and The Barren Grounds – 16 – 17 September 2017

John and Chuin Nee and their family were planning on a camping weekend at Carrington Falls in Budderoo National Park on the Southern Highlands. Quite a few friends joined them. In the party were – John, Chuin Nee, Jasper, Seby, Digi Dave, Wendy, Su Li, Brent, Gab, Burnsie, Eva and myself.

We met at the Cheese Factory at Robertson, and after a walk through the remnant rainforest close to the centre of town we headed out to the camping area at Carrington Falls. On the way we stopped off at the Robertson Pie Shop. John, had booked us all in on three sites at the campground. This is done online. When we arrived, rain was threatening, so we pitched our tents and then started exploring the area.  Continue reading →

Yardleys Cave and Houris Kitchen – 14 September 2017

I can remember years ago on a trip to Blue Gum Forest via Lockleys Pylon stopping just above the decent down to the Forest from the cliffs to take some photos and seeing people having lunch in a nearby cave across a small gully. I thought this may have been a cave used by either Frank Walford or Eric Dark and thought it worthy of a visit some day.

Later, a bit of internet research, I saw various bushwalking clubs walks programs that involved a cave called “Yardleys Cave” between Lockleys Pylon and Walford Gully. This sounded like the cave I had seen. So Bob and myself got around to visiting the cave on a walk.  Continue reading →

Photography at Cape Banks – 13 September 2017

David Hufton was keen for an afternoon of photography. I suggested a few places and we decided on Cape Banks at Kamay – Botany Bay National Park. We parked at the carpark for the Westpac Helicopter Base, and from there it is only a short walk to the headland.

We first investigated the old cemetery near the carpark. Many of the graves are around 100 years old and the tombstones show many of them were where children were buried.  Continue reading →

Weeding at West Head – 10 September 2017

Our bushcare group spent a day weeding at West Head in Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park. This time we weeded in the bush just under the West Head Lookout at the end of the road.

The main we we dug out was Crofton Weed. We removed a very large patch of this not far below the lookout. There was also some Lantana and quite a bit of Mother of Millions. We weeded till about 2 pm when we stopped for a late lunch. Continue reading →

Tempe Wetlands – 9 September 2017

I was free on Saturday, so was able to join the Tempe Birdos at their monthly bird count at the Tempe Wetlands and the adjoining Tempe Reserve.

Lots of interesting birds were out, including some very young Moorhen and Coot chicks. There was also a Spoonbill in the second pond. These birds are seldom seen at Tempe Wetlands.  Continue reading →

The Goat Track and the Kedumba Pinnacles – 7 September 2017

This was a very interesting walk with Bob in the Kedumba Valley. Many years earlier, I had observed a detached pinnacle under the Kedumba Walls. On a recent trip, at Sublime Point, with the benefit of late afternoon light and a telephoto lens, I could see that there were in fact three pinnacles all in the one area. Bob had seen my photos and was keen for a look.

We arrived on Kings Tableland at Wentworth Falls and first stopped at Sunset Rocks Lookout. This lookout is situated fairly close to where the pinnacles are. I had visited this lookout a few times but could not however recall seeing any pinnacles below. Our visit time confirmed this. The rock platform the lookout is on give fine views of the Jamison Valley, but it is too far away from the cliffs to see down.  Continue reading →
