Sassafras Gully Fungi – 29 May 2017

It had only been few days since my previous trip to Sassafras Gully, but on that trip, with Liz, we had only searched for fungi in the main gully. I was keen to return to see how the fungi was in Magdala Creek.

So, on this trip, I entered via Fairy Dell and Magdala Creek and returned via the track to Sassafras Gully Road. Magdala Creek turned out to be pretty good in the upper part. The track down the creek involves nine creek crossings to reach Glenbrook Creek. The good fungi continued high up until not much below the third creek crossing.  Continue reading →

Vivid Light Show – Visit on 28 May 2017

I made my first visit to Vivid on the 28th May. It was a Sunday night and it was very crowded.

My intention was to get sets of stills for a time lapse of the lights on the Opera House and the Museum of Contemporary Art. I first shot from the Cahill Expressway and from the Harbour Bridge Footpath. These both gave unobstructed views, but the Harbour Bridge did bounce around a bit due to traffic vibrations. Lane Cove Valley Fungi – 28 May 2017

This excursion was really an update to see how the fungi near Porters Creek that I think is Gliophorus psittacinus was going.

I started from Macquarie Park Station and walked into Lane Cove National Park and soon arrive at the Porters Creek Bridge. When I found the cluster of fungi, I found the Gliophorus psittacinus had dried out a fair bit. Some fresh ones had emerged, but none of them was bright orange. Continue reading →

Mill Creek Fungi – 27 May 2017

This was a field activity of The Sydney Fungal Studies Group Inc. It had been rescheduled from the previous Saturday after an adverse weather forecast. Mill Creek is a tributary of the Hawkesbury River and the area is within Dharug National Park.

Sassafras Gully Fungi – 26 May 2017

This was an excellent trip down Sassafras Gully looking for fungi. I was accompanied by Liz, whose powers of observation located many interesting species.

Under the Cliffs of North Head – 25 May 2017

This was an interesting and quite challenging walk. A few year back I had read two SUBW walks reports that described trips under the cliffs of North Head. The two walks were led by Paul Hatton. On the first trip, the party had gone part of the way, but then they had to turn back by high tides and a high swell. They late returned and went all the way. It seemed an interesting walk. I had mentioned it to Bob as a possible future trip, and eventually it became time to do it. The tides were right – a low tide in the middle of the day, and also another friend, Norm was in town, and could join us.

The walk starts near Shelly Beach and then follows under the cliffs (most of the way) to below Fairfax Lookout. To continue you need to climb some very scary and quite dangerous old fisherman’s ladders that partly scale the cliffs. More on those later. I don’t think you can continue around to the Quarantine Station – I think the cliffs go straight to the sea in some places. Continue reading →

Lane Cove Valley Fungi – 24 May 2017

After visiting Ferndale Park, I farewelled Ray and Elma, and walks down to the Lane Cove River at Fullers Bridge. I crossed the bridge and the followed the Riverside Track upstream to Porters Creek.

Gliophorus psittacinus

The fungi was good – particularly near Porters Creek. I was keen to see how the green waxcaps that I think are Gliophorus psittacinus were going. They were a lot large than my previous visit and I was able to get some nice photographs. Many of them had started changing to an orange colour. Bundeena to Marley Walk – 23 May 2017

Brian Everingham had organised a photographic walk for the National Parks Association of NSW from Bundeena to Marley and back in Royal National Park. On the trip, as well as Brian and myself were Ken, John, Valerie, Gary, Esther, Allen and James.

It was a beautiful day. We soon arrived at the Balconies and then we looked in vain for whales. With no luck, we turned our lenses to the resident population of New Holland Honeyeaters.  Continue reading →

Ferndale Park Fungi – 22 May 2017

This was my second visit to Ferndale Park. I was in the Chatswood area in the morning, so wandered over to the park in the afternoon. I was mainly interested in observing changes in the pink waxcaps.
