After recent trips to Bola Creek where a lot of fungi had been seen, I was keen to head up to Sassafras Gully at Springwood again.

What I found there was a veritable bonanza of fungi. I spent most of the day in the valley locating and photographing fungi and slime moulds. On this visit, I started from the track at Sassafras Gully Road and walked down to Glenbrook Creek and then went out via Magdala Creek and Fairy Dell. Continue reading
This was a field activity to Bola Creek in Royal National Park organised by the Sydney Fungal Studies Group Inc. On the morning, we spilt into groups and search for fungi, and collected samples to take back to the picnic table after lunch to work out what they were.

Digi Dave and myself had been on a walk at Garie earlier in the day, and after that we had been out on the Curra Moors. But it was not too late, so on the way back from Royal National Park, we made a stop and headed down to Bola Creek to see what fungi was out.
Things were rather good, and it would have been nice to spend more time. I would have this opportunity later in the week when I would head back down there with the Sydney Fungal Studies Group Inc for their field activity. Continue reading
I went on a pleasant morning photography walk organised by Brian Everingham for the National Parks Association of NSW. We met at the Garie beach carpark and set off along the beach to the north end.
On the walk as well as Brian were Ken, Suzanne, John, Digi Dave and myself. One of the things Brain wanted to do was to check out the recently competed track work completed on the hill north of the beach. This used to be a very bad section of the Coastal Track – badly eroded and requiring walkers to take huge steps. Now it has been rebuilt to a very high standard that should last many years. I was keen to visit Sassafras Gully again to see what fungi was out after the recent rain. On the day, the flow in the creeks was also quite reasonable for taking photos of the waterfalls. This meant a long day – there was a lot of fungi out, and spotting fungi and photographing it takes a while as does the side trips to some of the waterfalls.

I set off from Faulconbridge, down the Victory Track. On the way I could see a lot of fungi out – a good sign, even if they were very ordinary species. Things should improve lower down in the rainforest. Continue reading
This was a nice walk from Leura to Katoomba that I set out on the photograph the waterfalls and to look out for fungi.

The waterfalls were still up, but only a bit. So i didn’t have to worry about spray as much as on some previous trips although it also meant that the waterfalls were not as spectacular as they had been. The fungi was quite reasonable – especially near Leura Forest. Continue reading
I was heading up the mountains by train. On the way I looked at my phone to see the rainfall radar and look at the Scenic Railway webcam. Conditions did not look too good higher up, so I got off the train at Hazelbrook and headed down Oakland Road and then down the track to Horseshoe Falls.

It ended up raining lightly on and off most of the day. The creek had a good flow and the lighting was quite subdued – good conditions to photograph the waterfalls. The creek starts with a few small cascades, and later there is larger waterfall. This is the one I think is Fairy Falls. Continue reading
I headed out with Digi Dave for a great day of waterfall photography south of Sydney. Recent rain had put the creeks up – and that makes the waterfalls quite spectacular.
The lower falls of National Falls
The first waterfall we visited was National Falls in Royal National Park. This is double stage fall and they are located on McKell Avenue down from the village of Waterfall. The carpark is at the top of the upper falls. Continue reading
