This was a lovely day out in the bush. Jinki Ridge is high above the Grose Valley. It is the usual exit path for visitors to Dalpurra Canyon – and it is also one of the best places in the Upper Blue Mountain to see wildflowers.

It was time to head out to Newnes and walk up to the Red Rocks for a high camp.
In the party, as well as myself, were John, Chuin Nee and Jasper, and also Digi Dave, Stacey and Rik. We arrived at Newnes about lunchtime and walked straight up Little Capertee Creek and then up a side creek to the Wolgan/Capertee Divide. From there it was only a 15 minute walk to our campsite. We set up our tents and flys and then we could spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing, enjoying the magnificent views and taking the odd photo. Continue reading
It had been a while since I had been down to the Cooks River to photograph the birdlife. I wandered down today with my camera to see what birds were around.
It was the middle of the day, and most birds seemed to be resting. The ducks were very quiet in the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands. So were the Ibis. There were couple of pelicans at the Boat Harbour – again resting. Continue reading
Ian Brown, not long returned from a climbing trip to Greenland, has again produced his excellent Wild Blue Mountains Calendar. This is the 5th edition. Ian has a great love for the splendour and beauty of the Greater Blue Mountains and this love shines through in his photos. Each image has been obtained with painstaking attention to location, mood and lighting. and the results are a credit to Ian’s talent as a photographer.

My friends, David and Melissa, from Hobart were in town. A nice day was forecast and I suggested some coastal walking. They decided to walk out and around North Head and invited me to join them. This was my first visit to North Head.

I had another afternoon in Springwood, and chose to walk around the Sassafras Gully loop. It had been raining and I was hoping the creeks would be up. They were, but not by too much, but things were still very nice.

I headed up to Lane Cove Bushland Park at Gore Hill to see if there were any end of season fungi out. There was nothing that I found worth photographing, despite recent rain. So, I took a few photos of the creek and then continued downstream to Gore Creek Reserve and around the Coastal Walking Track to Berry Island and then to Balls Head. This was a nice walk.

This was a four day trip organised by the Colong Foundation for Wilderness. On the trip we went to quite a few sites in the Gardens of Stone area. Most of the sites that we visited are not in the Gardens of Stone National Park. Most of these very beautiful place are under imminent threat from open cut or longwall coal mining.
The best time to visit the waterfalls of the Blue Mountains is just after (or during) rain. It had been raining for the past few days and the creeks should be up – an ideal time. My friend Roger, was going up the mountains to help with a school excursion, so grabbed a ride. After a coffee stop at Springwood, I left and caught a train to Wentworth Falls.
I then started down the Charles Darwin Track. The creek was flowing quite nicely. It should be good conditions for photography further downstream. Nice soft lighting helped. The only penalty was getting wet feet in the numerous pools on the track – a small price to pay. Continue reading
The Bylong Labyrinth is the remarkable north west section of Wollemi National Park. It is a maze of complex ridges, pagoda rock formations, canyons and volcanic necks.
I went on a short three day walk there with Rik and Rob. The walk was “short” because we started at about lunchtime on Saturday and finished well before lunchtime on Monday. But we did enjoy two nights of high camps. Continue reading
