Malabar Headland – 3 September 2024

I decided to visit Malabar Headland National Park to check on the status of the Peregrine Falcons. On this visit, I walked in, and out from Malabar for a change.

It turned out to be a very good day. Continue reading

Orchids in Royal National Park – 2 September 2024

We were scheduled to go on a NPA walk to the Curra Moors in Royal National Park led by Brian Everingham. But, it turned out the walking tracks in the Park were all closed due to a a total fire ban and very strong winds being forecast. So, at the Curra Moors carpark, I took a few photos of some of the orchids nearby, then on the way out of the Park, we stopped off at The Forest Path carpark, at the south end of Lady Carrington Drive – and we all had a look for orchids near there. We found a surprising amount out.

First, here are some at the carpark for Curra Moors – Continue reading

Oatley Park Visit – 1 September 2024

I thought about time for another visit to Oatley Park. I was wondering what birds and orchids were out.

I caught a train to Oatley and walked to the Park, then started off along one of the tracks. Continue reading

More Raptors at Long Reef – 31 August 2024

I decided that another visit to Long Reef would be worthwhile. Lately it has been the best place to photograph raptors. But when I arrived, around 11 am, things turned out to be very quiet.

No other bird photographers were there. I walked down to the bottom level, and spotted one Osprey on the southern side of the headland. It was eating a fish, a big fish, so I knew it would be there for a fair while. Continue reading

Coba Ridge Walk – 29 August 2024

Bob and myself headed up to Fiddletown to walk along Coba Ridge in Marramarra National Park.  We had pleasant weather on our walk – where we were mainly looking for Aboriginal art sites.

We found a number of pretty good Aboriginal art sites – some rock engraving sites, and an art cave, but we also experienced an amazing display of wildflowers.

I had been to this area many years ago, when I mountain biked out along the ridge. Continue reading

Cooks River Birds – 28 August 2024

I went for a morning walk along the Cooks River – between Illawarra Road and Cahill Park.  The weather was fine, bit it was windy – and perhaps as a result, I did not see too many birds. Here are some that I saw –

Magpie Lark

Little Black Cormorants Continue reading

Birds at Sydney Park – 27 August 2024

Sue was keen to see the Pacific Baza at Sydney Park again, so I suggested we meet up at the Park and then go for a wander around and see if we could find it.

We met at the chimneys at 10 am and had spotted the Pacific Baza within ten minutes. Continue reading

Raptors at Long Reef – 25 August 2024

I decided to visit Long Reef again, hoping for more photographic opportunities with the local Ospreys.

I had a reasonable day, although it was bit quieter than other recent visits. This time the tide was high, so I could not walk out onto the rock platform. But high tide is often the best time for the Ospreys to hunt.

When I arrived, one Osprey was perched below the lookout – Continue reading

Birds along Terrys Creek – 24 August 2024

In the afternoon, I travelled up to Epping via the metro, and then walked down Pembroke Road to Terrys Creek. I was wanting to spot some Powerful Owls, and hopefully some newly fledged owlets. But despite a lot of looking, I didn’t see any.

But there were plenty of other birds – Continue reading
