I had visited Hen and Chicken Bay at Abbotsford early in January, and had been able to photograph the Bar-tailed Godwits that forage on the exposed mudflats during low tide. It was time for another visit to see if any of the Godwits were getting their colourful breeding plumage.
When I arrived, the first birds I observed were some Pied Oystercatchers –
And a Little Egret flew past –
Now for the Bar-tailed Godwits. There would have been about 30 of them scattered along the mudflats. If you quietly waited, the birds would get quite close as they foraged for food.
Here is a Silver Gull with its chick begin for food –
Back to the Bar-tailed Godwits –
This one is starting to look quite red –
This was a good way to spend an hour or two.
