Return to Kings Tableland – More Aboriginal Art – 10 July 2025

Recently Bob and myself had been on two excellent walks on Kings Tableland to look at some of the amazing Aboriginal art that is hidden away in the bush. See here and here. We were keen to return, but the road had been closed for a period while grading was taking place. It had recently re-opened, so we headed out for our next trip.

Most of the art we saw on this walk, were motifs done in charcoal, and many were very hard to discern. But they were still very interesting.

We set off along a quite scrubby ridge.

The first cave we visited had a small charcoal motif –

We then headed to another overhang. This was had a lot of charcoal art, all of it very hard to work out. It was not much of  a cave, and would not have been used for occupation, so we were a bit surprised that it had art in it.

A lot of wall panels had small charcoal motifs –

I then used my iDStretch software on my phone –

Here are some more views of the cave. You cans how small it is.

Not too far away was a third cave. We could only find one charcoal motif, but it was quite unusual.

Bob suggested that it could’ve depicted  a Gymea Lily flower. I thought it may have been a head-dress.

In a very small cave nearby, Bob found a tool with worked edges on the drip-line –

After that it was a scrubby return back to the road.

It was very cold and windy, and it looked like some rain squalls were on the way.

We then visited a sign-posted Aboriginal art cave near Battleship Tops. This cave has been vandalised over the years and the art is very hard to see. We had visited the cave before and not seen too much. Would the stretching software help? It did.

Not far away, is a second cave. This looks like a good occupation cave.

Previously, we had seen a faint hand stencil. The stretching software made it easy to see.
