Coastal Walking at Kiama – Minnamurra to Bombo – 31 July 2017

Brian Everingham invited me to join him on his walk for the National Parks Association of NSW along the Kiama Coastal Walk from Minnamurra to Kiama. I had done this walk last year and a few weeks earlier had redone the southern section of it from Gerringong to Kiama. Its a nice walk – well worth repeating.

The party – Brian, Faye, Val, Suzanne, Peter and myself travelled by train down to Minnamurra. Rain was forecast, and when we got off the train, the ground was wet, so it had been raining. Hopefully any more rain would hold off for a while.

We walked down to the Minnamurra River and then joined the coastal path. It begins be climbing over a headland which provides great views of Stack Island with its latite columns and several other volcanic features.

As well, we spotted a Australasian Kestrel perching on a bush near the path. Nice to see. Another walker coming in the opposite direction told us he had just seen a pod of dolphins, we walked fast south, but couldn’t spot them.

There were a lot of interesting features to see –

We soon arrived at Jones Beach and crossed it to the Cathedral Rocks beyond. These are an impressive set of sea stacks.

Then a short bit of road walking took us to the track to the Boneyard – a popular surf beach near Bombo Headland. It then started raining, and the rain got heavier as we continued. We ventured out to the headland and this gave us stunning views over the old Bombo Quarry – now a geological heritage site.

we walked back to the main path and then continued along to a picnic area near the Bombo Quarry Road. The picnic shelters provided refuge for lunch out of the rain. Being out of the rain, also allowed us to consult our phones and thus the train timetable. We could see Bombo Station about half a kilometre away and a train was expected soon that would take us back to Sydney. So rather than continue our walk – we headed to the station.

More photos from the walk are online here. Thanks to Brian for organising it.

    Hi David,
Thinking of doing this walk with my uncle from England. What sort of distances are involved, overall and for the various sections. Regards, Emilios from Caringbah.

    • Dave Noble says:

It depends on where you start and finish. The whole walk is supposed to be about 22 km, but probably longer if you start from Gerringong Station. Its a bit a walk to the coast. The Kiama – Minnamurra section is shorter – about 8 – 9 km.

Hey David, thanks for sharing. The second last image, the shot with the bird on the rock. It appears to be looking towards stack Island Minnamurra. But where was that shot taken from?

    • Dave Noble says:

I think the bird is on one of the Cathedral Rocks, so it would be a telephoto shot – compressing the scene a bit.
