Birds at Barton Park – 29 June 2019

I spent an interesting afternoon at Barton Park photographing the birdlife. It was a good day for raptors.

I cycled there, and first visited the Landing Lights Wetland. It was quiet. The quietest I have ever seen it. No ducks, no stilts, no avocets. Only two White-faced Herons.

And a few Welcome Swallows zooming around after insects.

I then went up to the high level. On top of one of the lamps was a Nankeen Kestrel.

It soon flew off. I thought it may have gone hunting for food, but then I saw a Black-shouldered Kite. So perhaps it had been scared off?

The Kite then started hunting for food. It would hover scanning the ground. Then look up to check for other birds who might not like it, then resume is scanning below.

It then dived.

It flew back up without anything. It then dived again, this time it had caught a rodent. It flew off with it.

I then looked around for other birds. A Willie Wagtail was nearby.

An Egret flew past.

I then spotted another raptor. It was a Brown Goshawk. It was perched , but didn’t stay for long.

It took off and flew towards the Wetlands. I was unable to see where it went.

Time to head home.
