I joined Valerie and Sue for a pleasant and interesting day spent at three locations in North West Sydney. We visited Bushells Lagoon, Pitt Town Lagoon and then Scheyville National Park.
Our first stop at Buchells Lagoon proved to be a bit of a disappointment. It had been a while since my last visit to the normally grea birding spot, and since that time, and with recent rain it was very full of water. Much higher than normal. This may not have suited some of the birds as a lot of the reeds were covered.
The road between the ponds was also very muddy. So we didn’t stay long. Here are a few of the birds – a Fairy Martin, some Pacific Black Ducks and a Reed Warbler.
Pitt Town Lagoon was similarly high. The only birds we could see were very distant, so again our visit was brief. We then headed up the road to the Longneck Lagoon section of Scheyville National Park. There is a walk around this lagoon – and it turned out to be both pleasant and interesting.
The track passed through some amazing Paperbark forest.
Further around was a boardwalk heading out to a nice platform where we stopped for lunch.
Here are some of the birds we saw –
Eastern Yellow Robins
Yellow-faced Honeyeater
Striated Thornbill
Yellow-billed Spoonbill
Little Pied Cormorant
Striated Thornbill
Brown Thornbill
Australasian Grebe
Grey Fantail
Rufous Whistler
We then visited some of the other section of the park – one was at the park headquarters and a nearby area of woodland. It is a nice spot.
