Birds of the Northern Beaches – 26 February 2021

I had been meaning to head up to the Northern beaches for a while in order to see some migratory birds at Long Reef. I had not managed a trip due to unfavourable weather or tides. Now I had a chance  to make a visit. The low tide period was in the afternoon, so I spent the early part of the day on the sea cliffs seeing if any Peregrine Falcons were about. I found one.

It stayed around long enough for me to get some nice photos of it flying, and one take-off sequence.

While I was on the cliffs, a Great Cormorant flew past.

I then headed to Long Reef. While I was walking out a White-bellied Sea Eagle flew past and headed out to sea.

Out on the rock platform, the only migratory birds I spotted were a large group of Red-necked Stints. Here are some photos –

And some of the other birds out on the rock platform –

Sooty Oystercatchers

Crested Terns

Great Cormorant

I was hoping to see some Ospreys and the resident Nankeen Kestrels – but had no luck this time.
