Fungi at Bola Creek – 28 February 2023

Valerie and Sue were keen to see if any fungi was out at Bola Creek in Royal National Park. They invited me to join them.

There had been some quite good rain during the month, but it had been a while since the last good fall, and since then the weather had been quite hot, so we didn’t know what to expect. We did find some reasonable fungi, but not a huge amount was out.

We spotted two species of waxcap, First this red Hybgrocybe sp. (probably Hygrocybe miniata) –

Pluteus lutescens

Phaeoclavulina zippelii

Our second waxcap – Porpolomopsis lewelliniae

Clavaria zollingeri

Russula sp.

Perhaps another Russula sp. ?

Sanguinoderma rude

I am not sure what this rather large mushroom is –

Perhaps Boletellus ananiceps

Another one I am not sure about –

Perhaps Boletellus ananiceps

Phaeoclavulina zippelii

Leucocoprinus fragilissimus

I was looking out for Trumpet Fungi in a spot I oftenest them out early in the season – along a dirt bank. I didn’t see any, but I did spot this quite small polypore.

It looks very similar to the one I spotted two days earlier in Birdwood Gully at Springwood. It was only about 6 mm tall.

This one was emerging from the ground –

Cruentomycena viscidocruenta

Cyptotrama asprata

Perhaps Clavulinopsis amoena

We noticed heaps of these balls on the leaf litter. They are the fruit of the Coachwoods. Very confusing when you are scanning the ground looking for fungi.

Thanks to Valerie for driving us down and back. It had been a very interesting excursion.
