Mudlarks – Cooks River Bird Survey – 9 January 2024

I had an early start and joined the Mudlarks for their monthly bird survey along the Cooks River. This month the group were surveying upstream from the Lang St Bridge – to the Boat Harbour, then crossing over to the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands and then returning downstream on that side.

Here are some of the birds we saw –

Australasian Figbirds

Chestnut Teal

Little Black Cormorant

Little Pied Cormorant

Royal Spoonbill

Pacific Black Duck

Rainbow Lorikeet

Pacific Koel

Superb Fairy-wren

This Willie Wagtail looks like it may be starting to build a nest –

Pelican

Australian Swamphens

Little Corella

We also spotted a number of quite large eels at the outlet to the Cup and Saucer Wetlands.

Dusky Moorhen – on a nest.

As usual, the group finished with morning tea in Ewen Park.
