Fungi at Sassafras Gully – 9 April 2023

It had been a while since I had visited Sassafras Gully at Springwood to look for fungi. I had visited Birdwood Gully on the other (north) side of Springwood quite a few times recently and thought it was time to even things up a bit. on this trip – I went down the track from Sassafras Gully Road and walked down to the Glenbrook Creek junction. I walked out via the Wiggins Track.

I was pleased to find a lot of the striking light blue Entoloma virescens (now called Inocephalus virescens) out in one spot I had seen them on previous trips.

Here are some that I spotted. There were quite a few boletes. Continue reading

Tempe Bird Survey – 8 April 2023

I joined the Tempe Birdos for their monthly bird survey. Being Easter, the number of participants was smaller than usual – so we did not split up into two groups, and we all surveyed the Wetlands. The birds seemed to be on an Easter holiday too – as it was pretty quiet. Here are some that we spotted –

Wolli Creek and Cooks River Walk – 7 April 2023

This is one of my regular walks. I caught a bus to Bexley North and then walked down the Two Valleys Track, all the way along Wolli Creek to its junction with the Cooks River and then walked up the Cooks River to where I could turn off towards home.

This time, I had a late start. I was waiting for the rain to stop.

Mason Park Wetlands – 5 April 2023

I spent the morning at Mason Park Wetlands at Homebush. Again, I was on the lookout for the Spotted Crake (and the Latham’s Snipe) – and again with no success. But I did observe a lot of other interesting birds.

La Perouse – Cape Banks Walk – 3 April 2023

This was a very pleasant walk with the National Parks Association of NSW, led by Brian Everingham. The plan was to meet at La Perouse, and then walk to the nearby Congwong Beach, and then to Henry Head and Cape Banks. From there head north to the old cemetery and then along a road to the Jennifer Street Boardwalk to see a patch of Eastern Suburbs Banksia Ecological Community, and then back to the start.

Thanks to Valerie and Deb for al lift to La Perouse. While we gathering, I headed down to the waterfront to photograph some birds. Continue reading
