After seeing some interesting birds along the Hawthorne Canal on the bird survey three day earlier, I thought a morning trip could be worthwhile.
This time I caught the light rail to Marion St and started along the Greenway from there towards Hawthorne station. It turned out to be fairly quiet.
I was able to spend a few hours at Sydney Park in the afternoon. During my visit, it did rain for about 15 minutes and I had to shelter under a marquee at the farm section.
I wandered around the ponds seeing what birds were out. No sign of the Dollarbird – it seems to have headed north to warmer parts. I thought I heard the odd call of a Rail but none emerged from the vegetation. And no sign of any Tawny Frogmouths. So I had to concentrate on the waterbirds. Continue reading
A wet day was forecast, especially in the morning, but it was starting to look better in the middle of the day, so I sent messages to Valerie and Sue to see if they would like to join me at Mason Park at Homebush.

It was time for the Bird Survey along the Greenway between Taverners Hill and Hawthorne Light Rail Stations.
The group met at Taverners Hill and things started off fairly quiet. We often record a lot of small birds from the elevated level of the station – but this morning, for some reason, we saw very few birds there. Continue reading
My friend Valerie had been on the Mudlarks Cooks River Bird Survey earlier in the morning, and after it finished, we both headed down to Kurnell for a walk in Kamay Botany Bay National Park. Big seas were forecast and that seemed a good reason to head to the coast.
We had a glorious walk. The sea was wicked! Huge waves crashed against the cliffs. We had to walk into a headwind but that was small price to pay to see such wave power. Continue reading
I got up early and walked down to the Lang St footbridge on the Cooks River by 7:30 am to join the Mudlarks for their monthly bird survey along the River. This month the group was going downstream, on what we call the Wave Rock Circuit.

It was good to catch up with Digi Dave again for a trip to Bola Creek in Royal National Park to check out the fungi. I was hopeful that conditions would be good as there had been recent rain. But conditions turned out to be a bit disappointing. It seems that since the rain, the weather has been quite hot and windy. We certainly found the leaf litter quite crunchy to walk on in places. Nevertheless, we did find some interesting fungi out.
In one small spot, we found some small pink waxcaps. They appear to be Hygrocybe roseoflavida. Continue reading
