Sassafras Gully Fungi – 20 May 2024

After some recent very good trips finding fungi in Birdwood Gully on the north side of Springwood. I thought it worth checking out some of the gullies on the south side. So I travelled up to Springwood by myself and set off down to Fairy Dell and Magdala Creek. I then reached Glenbrook Creek and walked upstream to Sassafras Gully, and then walked out via the track to Sassafras Gully Road. The fungi was quite reasonable.

First, here is some fungi from Magdala Creek.

High up, I often find Hygrocybe reesiae. I certainly found a lot of it here – Continue reading

Lane Cove River and Terrys Creek Fungi – 19 May 2024

One of the areas that I like to regularly visit to look for fungi is the Lane Cove River Valley. It had been a while since I had visited the upper section of the river, so I decided to do a walk from Thornleigh Oval to Browns Waterhole, then exit via Terrys Creek. The fungi was not as abundant asI had been hoping for, but with a large area covered, I did find a fair amount.

My first stop to photograph, was at the bottom of Lorna Pass. Just before the track crosses the creek, I found a number of coral species and some green waxcaps. Continue reading

Ferndale Park Fungi – 18 May 2024

I attended the field study of the Sydney Fungal Studies Group held at Ferndale Park at Chatswood. I was joined by 19 other keen fungi enthusiasts and we found a good diversity of interesting fungi.

Here is some of the fungi that we found – Continue reading

Birdwood Gully Fungi – 16 May 2024

I travelled up to Springwood by train with Valerie and Sue to look for fungi down Birdwood Gully. After a coffee stop, we headed down the track from Boland Avenue and were soon down in the rainforest. Would the fungi be as good as my last visit? We would see.

The fungi was probably not quite as abundant as my previous trip, but it was still very good. Here are some that we saw – Continue reading

Wolli Creek Fungi – 15 May 2024

After a good morning spent on the Lane Cove River, I decided to visit Wolli Ck Regional Park for an afternoon trip. I was joined by Valerie – and we met at Girrahween Park. We had limited time – and we only went down to the old swimming pool and back, but we found some nice fungi out.

One reason for the  visit was to check on the Hygrocybe taekeri that I had found on my last visit. I wanted to know how it was going.

Lane Cove River Fungi – 15 May 2024

After finding some interesting coral and waxcap fungi at Springwood and Wolli Creek recently, I was keen to check out a site I know close to the Lane Cove River, in Lane Cove National Park. It is one of three sites I know where I have found what I think is the Parrot Waxcap  – Gliophorus psittacinus.

Fungi at Sydney Park – 14 May 2024

I made visit to Sydney Park to look for fungi. There was a lot out – but I was too late for the best of it. In one section, where some new garden beds and been mulched with wood chips, there were hundreds of stinkhorns – but most of them were a bit old and falling to bits. When fresh they would have been an impressive spectacle.

Here are some of the fungi I found – Continue reading

Mudlarks – Cooks River Bird Survey – 14 May 2024

I joined the Mudlarks for their monthly bird survey along the Cooks River. This month the group were surveying upstream – from the Lang Street Bridge – to the Boat Harbour, then across to the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands and then back on that side.

Here are some birds we saw – Continue reading

Bola Creek and The Forest Path Fungi – 13 May 2024

I headed down to Royal National Park with Sue and Valerie, with the intention of finding lots of great fungi along Bola Creek. Well – little did we know that the creek was high and dangerous to cross, so we didn’t even try, and also – their had been massive flood – and a lot of good fungi habitat near the creek had been scoured. Leaf litter washed away and deposited in great heaps in other places. Higher ground was still very waterlogged and this is not conducive to fungal fruiting. But we made the most of it – and walked around the Forest Path, and had an interesting day.

Walking down Lady Carrington Drive we found this nice Stinkhorn – Aseroë rubraContinue reading

Wolli Creek Fungi – 12 May 2024

After a good, but short trip a few days earlier, I thought it could be worthwhile doing a more substantial trip along Wolli Ck to look for fungi. This time I started at Bexley Road, and walked all the way down the Two Valleys Track to the Cooks River, and then up the Cooks River to Illawarra Road.

I did find some reasonable fungi, although not as much as I had been hoping for. Here is some – Continue reading
