Caleys Range Weekend 29 – 30 August 2020

A friend, Dave Os, invited me to join him and some others on a walk along the Caleys Range in the Devils Wilderness. Dave’s plan was to walk along the fire trail to near its end and look for a campsite and then do a few short side trips. He had already contacted the landholder and obtained permission to walk through.

We met up at a cafe on the Bell Road, and then proceeded to the property we would start from. After talking to the landholders, we set off with our packs along the fire road that goes along Caleys Range. It was easy pleasant walking. Continue reading →

Centennial Park – Powerful Owls – 28 August 2020

I made another visit to Centennial Park to see if the owlets had fledged. They had not, but I was able to get some reasonable photos of the parents. They were more visible this visit.

Mots of the time the adult owls are asleep, as they should be, but they are always aware of what is going on around them. If you wait patiently, then you do see them open their eyes – so you can get better photos. Continue reading →

Looking at Orchids – 28 August 2020

I was invited to see some very rare and unusual orchids that had been found in part of greater Sydney. This was a real privilege. I did take some photos, but because these orchids are not often seen, I am not publishing the photos at present. On the same walk, I spotted a lot of common orchids – all Caladenia sp.

Holbeach Descent and Spring Creek Ridge Pass – Kings Tableland – 27 August 2020

Over a year ago, I had been on a trip with Bob, where we had tried unsuccessfully to negotiate a pass on the ridge near Spring Creek on Kings Tableland. On that trip we had tried to find the pass from the top – that was a big mistake, although we had no idea about this at the time. This time, with some new information, and joined by Doug, we were successful.

Our plan, which we followed exactly, was to park at the start of the Lion Head track, then walk out to Lions Head and descend a nearby pass known as Holbeach Descent. This would take us own to Spring Creek. Then we would cross  the creek, and hopefully walk on terraces to the base of Spring Creek Ridge. Then we would climb the pass and then walk back across the very scrubby tops back to the Kings Tableland Road. Continue reading →

Taronga Zoo Visit – 26 August 2020

A very pleasant visit to Taronga Zoo. On this occasion, I met up with Sue, who I know from NPA walks. She also has a yearly pass. It was the perfect day for a visit – the Zoo was extraordinarily quiet. Not that many visitors – few overseas tourists, no school students on excursion. No crowds.

Palm Jungle Walk – 25 August 2020

Another outing in Royal National Park. This was a walk led by Brian Everingham for the National Parks Association of NSW. The original plan was to start from Garrawarra Farm and then walk down to Burning Palms, through the Palm Jungle then follow the Coastal Track to the top of the escarpment, then walk back to Garrawarra Farm via the fire trail. However, the Garrawarra farm area was closed due to road and track upgrading works. So Brian change the walk to an out and back from Garie Beach.

Starting from Garie meant a longer walk with more hills to climb – so we had a good leg stretch. The weather was perfect for walking. At Garie carpark, there were the usual residents – Superb Fairy-wrens. Continue reading →

Powerful Owls at Centennial Park – 23 August 2020

On my way home from the Central Coast, I made a side trip to Centennial Park to see how the Powerful Owls were going. I was keen to see if the owlets had fledged, and if not, then it would be interesting to see the parents feeding them at dusk.
