Looking for New Canyons – 27 February 2020

With the current situation post bushfires with most National Parks still closed and very few canyons open, it was time to look for some new canyons in the non burnt out areas.

I had stored away a few possibilities. Creeks that may have canyons sections, but probably not that spectacular, nor worth bothering about in normal times. So I travelled up the mountains with Bob, and on the way, at our coffee stop, we worked out what we were going to do. Continue reading →

Back to Sydney Park – 26 February 2020

Like the afternoon, the day before, I made another late trip to Sydney Park. This time I was a bit more successful.

Bailon’s Crake

Persistence paid off. I finally saw my first Crake – a Bailon’s Crake (Spottless Crakes have also been seen at Sydney Park). This was thanks to another bird watcher there – I think his name was Alain, show saw it first and pointed it out to me. It was skulking behind the reeds. Birds at Sydney Park – 25 February 2020

I got back pretty early from Royal National Park and so decided to make another visit to Sydney Park in the late afternoon.

Latham’s Snipe

This time I was a bit more fortunate. I spotted a Latham’s Snipe fairly early. Then I ran into another hird photographer – Nick, and he was later joined by Lorne, who knows the birds at the park very well. They were on the track of a Lewin’s Rail. They spotted the Lewin’s Rail while I was on the far side of the pool, and by the time I had walked around, it had disappeared. But I was at least happy to see the Snipe. Curra Moors Walk – 25 February 2020

As walks go, the loop around the Curra Moors in Royal National Park is hard to beat. Its great for wildflowers, birds, first and coastal heath, the great sea cliffs and some of the highest waterfalls close to Sydney.

More Birds at The Central Coast Wetlands – 24 February 2020

This was another rewarding day spent at the Central Coast Wetlands at Wyong. Like previous trips, I caught the train to Wyong and then walked the short distance to the wetlands.

As I walked in, I spotted an Australian Hobby perched on a dead tree. The tree was very close to the road, so I too a few distant photos, then walked a bit closer and took some more, and repeated this until it flew off. Continue reading →

Fungi and Birds – Ferndale Park and the Lane Cove River – 23 February 2020

I was keen to check out changes to the fungi at Ferndale Park at Chatswood, so caught a train over and lake down to the park. After my visit, I continued along the track along Swaines Creek to the Lane Cove River and then walked downstream seeing what birds were around. At Epping Road, I caught a bus to St Leonards Station.

It was wet for some of the time during the day, and at one stage when the rain was heavy I sought shelter in a small overhang at Ferndale Park. The fungi was not that abundant or special. Here are some that I saw – Continue reading →

Fungi at Wolli Creek – 22 February 2020

After the Greenway Bird Survey, in the afternoon, I caught a bus to Earlwood and walked down to Wolli Creek near Bardwell Park Station. I followed the two Valleys Track upstream looking for fungi, and then went downstream along the track, to Turrella.

I was also on the lookout for birds – and heard many, but was not able to get a lot of photos. Some light rain did not help. Continue reading →
